New Travel Opportunities for Pakistani Citizens
In a positive development for Pakistani travelers, Tajikistan is considering granting both e-visas and visa-on-arrival facilities to Pakistani citizens. The move is seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen ties between Islamabad and Dushanbe, making travel and trade more accessible.
Currently, Pakistanis often face lengthy and complex procedures when applying for visas to Central Asian states. If implemented, Tajikistan’s decision would mark a significant shift, bringing the country in line with other destinations that are opening doors to Pakistani tourists and business travelers. Recently, Kuwait also launched a smart e-visa system with four new visa categories, further expanding travel options for Pakistanis in the region.
High-Level Diplomatic Meetings
The development followed discussions between Sardar Yasir Ilyas, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Tourism, and Tajikistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister. According to officials, visa facilitation was one of the main items on the agenda.
During the talks, the two sides also explored the potential for barter trade in agricultural goods, a mechanism that could help bypass currency-related challenges and boost bilateral commerce.
Expanding Trade and Industrial Cooperation
In a separate meeting, Yasir Ilyas held talks with Tajik Minister of Industry and New Technologies, Sherali Kabir. Both sides agreed on the need to enhance exports of textiles, leather goods, and building materials from Pakistan to Tajikistan.
Pakistan’s textile sector, which contributes nearly 60% of the country’s total exports, is seeking new markets amid global competition. Tajikistan, with its growing construction sector and consumer demand, could provide opportunities for expansion.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
Beyond traditional trade, discussions also touched on cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI). Officials from both countries expressed interest in building partnerships in research, training, and technology transfer.
For Pakistan, collaboration in AI could support its ambition to modernize its economy and foster innovation, while Tajikistan could benefit from Pakistan’s relatively advanced IT sector.
Enhancing Connectivity and Transport Links
Yasir Ilyas also met with Tajikistan’s Deputy Minister of Transport. Talks centered on expanding air connectivity between the two nations and hosting joint economic conferences to encourage private sector participation.
Improved transport links are expected to play a crucial role in unlocking economic potential. Direct air routes between Pakistan and Tajikistan remain limited, forcing travelers to transit through other countries. Expanded services could therefore increase both tourism and trade flows.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
The meetings are being seen as part of a wider effort to deepen relations between Pakistan and Tajikistan. Both countries share historical, cultural, and linguistic ties, as well as a common interest in regional stability and economic growth.
Tajikistan is a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), where Pakistan also plays an active role. Enhanced cooperation could therefore contribute not only to bilateral gains but also to broader regional integration in Central and South Asia.
What This Means for Pakistani Travelers
If Tajikistan finalizes its visa-on-arrival plan, Pakistani citizens will find it easier to explore opportunities in tourism, business, and education. The decision could also encourage other Central Asian nations to follow suit, opening up a region that has often remained difficult for Pakistanis to access.
At a time when international travel options for Pakistanis are limited due to visa restrictions, Tajikistan’s move may be welcomed as a step toward greater mobility and regional engagement.
