Umar Akmal renews criticism of Waqar Younis
Former Pakistan cricketer Umar Akmal has once again blamed Waqar Younis, the team’s former head coach, for the downfall of his international career. Speaking during a private television talk show, Akmal claimed that Waqar’s alleged personal bias, not performance issues, led to his exclusion from the national team.
Akmal said, Waqar Younis caused the greatest damage to my career. He was envious of my popularity, income, and lifestyle. I was sidelined not because of my cricket, but because of his jealousy.
The 34-year-old right-handed batsman, who last represented Pakistan in 2019, has often been a controversial figure due to disciplinary issues and inconsistent performances. However, this is not the first time he has publicly accused Waqar Younis of unfair treatment.
Claims that other senior players were also affected
During the interview, Akmal alleged that he was not the only player who suffered under Waqar’s coaching tenure. He claimed that several senior players also faced similar difficulties and career setbacks.
Without naming anyone, Akmal suggested that internal politics and personal favoritism had a damaging effect on team unity. It wasn’t just me — other experienced players were also affected because of Waqar’s attitude, he said.
Akmal says he has evidence and will speak at the right time
Umar Akmal further stated that he possesses evidence to back his claims and intends to reveal it publicly when the right time comes. He added that his recent remarks were not meant to disrespect Waqar as a former cricketer, but as a coach, he did not deserve respect.
I respect Waqar Younis as a senior player, but not as a head coach, Akmal emphasized.
A fresh debate on player-coach relations in Pakistan cricket
Akmal’s latest allegations have reignited discussion over the strained relationships between coaches and players in Pakistan’s cricketing setup. Analysts point out that similar controversies have surfaced repeatedly, often highlighting a lack of trust and communication between management and players.
Waqar Younis, one of Pakistan’s most celebrated fast bowlers, has served multiple stints as head coach between 2010 and 2017. He has not yet responded to Akmal’s recent claims.
Background and recent context
Umar Akmal, who made his international debut in 2009, was once seen as one of Pakistan’s most promising batting talents. However, his career has been marred by disciplinary problems, including a ban in 2020 for failing to report a spot-fixing approach. The ban was later reduced on appeal.
Despite showing flashes of brilliance early on, Akmal’s inconsistent form and off-field controversies have overshadowed his potential. His renewed accusations against Waqar Younis are likely to add fuel to the ongoing debate about accountability, favoritism, and professionalism within Pakistan cricket’s management structure.
