WASHINGTON: The White House has launched a sharp attack on CNN reporter Kristen Holmes after she asked US President Donald Trump about comments made by a Democratic senator concerning one of his aides.
The confrontation took place on Monday during an event in the Oval Office, where Trump was honouring a teenage lifeguard who had recently saved a child from dangerous ocean conditions.
Holmes asked Trump about remarks made by Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff regarding the president’s executive assistant, Natalie Harp, 35.
The question prompted a strong reaction from the White House and Trump himself, adding to a series of recent confrontations between the administration and female journalists.
Trump Tells Reporter to Be Quiet
Trump later criticised Holmes when she attempted to ask another question, this time concerning North Korea.
“You’re a loud, boisterous person, you’re fake news, be quiet,” Trump told the reporter.
He also described Holmes as “very disrespectful”.
The exchange occurred during an event that was originally intended to recognise the actions of a young lifeguard. However, Trump frequently allows journalists to ask questions about a range of political and international issues during Oval Office appearances.
The White House’s Rapid Response account subsequently intensified the criticism, accusing Holmes of using an event honouring a hero to raise what it described as an inappropriate question about a presidential staff member.
White House Defends Trump
In a post on X, the White House Rapid Response team said Holmes had used the occasion to take what it called a “cheap shot” at one of Trump’s staffers.
The account also posted a video of Trump’s exchange with the journalist and directly criticised Holmes.
Earlier, the account told the reporter that her children might eventually encounter the question she had asked, describing it in extremely negative terms.
The comments have added to a continuing dispute between the Trump administration and sections of the US media over the way journalists question the president and his officials.
.@KristenhCNN is a disgraceful, humiliating embarrassment to her alleged profession.@POTUS hosts a hero lifeguard in the Oval Office and she uses it as an opportunity to take a cheap shot about one of President Trump’s staffers.

CNN Defends Kristen Holmes
CNN strongly rejected the criticism directed at Holmes and defended the reporter.
In a statement, the network described the attacks as being “beneath the office” and said it stood firmly behind Holmes.
“We stand firmly behind Kristen and reject these attacks in the strongest possible terms,” CNN said.
The confrontation comes amid a broader pattern of tense exchanges between Trump and journalists, particularly when questions concern controversial political issues or members of his administration.

Why Natalie Harp Has Drawn Attention
Harp has recently attracted increased public attention after reports that she was among a small number of aides who accompanied Trump during a secret Air Force One aircraft swap in July.
Her close proximity to the president has also generated considerable discussion online.
Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff referred to Harp during a campaign speech on Sunday, accusing Trump of being more focused on building a new ballroom and travelling with his aide than on carrying out his presidential responsibilities.
Trump responded by attacking Ossoff personally, describing him as a “Pee-wee Herman lookalike”, while defending plans for a reported $400 million ballroom at the White House.
Trump did not directly address the substance of Ossoff’s comments about Harp.

Harp’s Prominent Role Around Trump
Harp, who previously worked in television news, is frequently seen alongside Trump and has become known for providing him with printed information and documents.
Her close working relationship with the president has attracted attention in the US media and online.
A book titled Regime Change, published this year by two New York Times reporters, also discussed Harp’s relationship with Trump and reported that she had written him highly admiring letters.
The claims have contributed to wider public interest in Harp’s role within Trump’s inner circle.
White House Official Also Criticises Ossoff
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung had previously responded to Ossoff’s remarks about Harp, attacking the Democratic senator and calling him the “biggest loser in politics.”
The latest confrontation therefore reflects a broader political dispute involving Trump, his administration, Democratic critics and members of the White House press corps.
While the original Oval Office event was intended to celebrate a teenager’s lifesaving actions, the occasion instead became another public confrontation between the president and a journalist, followed by a strong defence of the reporter from CNN.
