The Oscar-winning actor has been spotted filming the new prison thriller in Sydney, marking his return to movies after the success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

Hollywood star Will Smith is returning to the big screen with the upcoming thriller Supermax, and filming for the highly anticipated project is now underway in Sydney, Australia.

The 57-year-old Oscar-winning actor was recently spotted filming scenes for the movie on August 26. Smith was seen walking through the outdoor corridors of Sydney’s Western Sydney Hotel, wearing a metallic copper tracksuit, a white T-shirt and Nike Jordans.

A Murder Inside the World’s Most Secure Prison

Produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Supermax is a thriller centred on two FBI agents investigating a murder inside what is described as the world’s most secure prison.

Will Smith plays the lead role of Rex, who becomes involved in the investigation as the mystery surrounding the murder unfolds. The story is expected to combine elements of crime, suspense and action.

Actress AnnaSophia Robb has also joined the cast and will play an FBI agent working alongside Smith’s character. Jaafar Jackson is another notable member of the film’s cast.

Robb confirmed her involvement in the project through an Instagram post in July, expressing excitement about joining the upcoming thriller.

Strong Team Behind the Project

Supermax is being produced by Will Smith’s production company, Westbrook, in collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios and Miramax.

The film is being directed by David Gordon Green, while the screenplay has been written by David Weil and David J. Rosen. Both writers are also serving as executive producers on the project.

The involvement of several major production companies has further increased expectations surrounding the film, although further details about its plot remain limited.

First Film Since ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’

Supermax marks Will Smith’s first film since Bad Boys: Ride or Die, in which he reunited with longtime co-star Martin Lawrence.

The 2024 action comedy proved to be a commercial success and earned approximately $193.5 million at the domestic box office.

Away from feature films, Smith has remained active in television and other projects. Earlier this year, he hosted National Geographic’s Pole to Pole with Will Smith, a documentary series that saw him take on a range of extreme challenges, including skiing to the South Pole and diving beneath the ice near the North Pole.

He also made a surprise appearance in the series finale of Bel-Air, where he appeared as “OG” and shared the screen with the actor portraying the younger version of his famous television character.

When Will ‘Supermax’ Be Released?

Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed that Supermax will be released exclusively on Prime Video worldwide. However, a release date has not yet been announced.

With filming now underway, the project brings Will Smith back to the centre of a major action-thriller production — this time with a high-security prison, a murder investigation and a mystery filled with secrets.
