ARLINGTON: Spain’s rising star Lamine Yamal will have an opportunity to make another statement on football’s biggest stage when his side faces France in Tuesday’s FIFA World Cup semi-final. Standing in his way is French captain Kylian Mbappe, who is chasing another World Cup title and a place among the greatest players in tournament history.
The highly anticipated encounter pits one of football’s brightest young talents against one of the sport’s biggest global stars in what promises to be one of the standout matches of the tournament.
Yamal Chasing Mbappe’s Teenage World Cup Achievement
Yamal hopes to follow in Mbappe’s footsteps by winning the World Cup while still a teenager. Mbappe achieved the feat in 2018, when he helped France lift the trophy at the age of 19 years and 207 days. He also became only the second teenager, after Pele in 1958, to score in a World Cup final.
While this is Yamal’s first World Cup appearance, he has already announced himself on the international stage. During Euro 2024, his spectacular goal against France in the semi-final inspired Spain to a 2-1 victory, just days before his 17th birthday. Spain went on to defeat England in the final, and Yamal was named the tournament’s Best Young Player.
Now, as he prepares to celebrate his 19th birthday on the eve of the semi-final in Arlington, Yamal is eager to leave a lasting mark on another major tournament.
Injury Scare Before the Tournament
The Barcelona winger’s World Cup participation had been uncertain after he suffered a hamstring injury toward the end of the club season.
Reflecting on that period, Yamal admitted he feared missing the tournament altogether.
“I was afraid it might be serious and, above all, that even if it wasn’t serious, I could suffer a setback and end up missing the World Cup,” he said in late May.
He began Spain’s campaign as a substitute in a goalless draw against Cape Verde before scoring in a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Since then, he has started every match but has yet to add to his goal tally.
Spain Want Yamal to Stay Patient
Spain captain Rodri believes the young winger is putting too much pressure on himself.
He said Yamal sometimes appears anxious because he wants to demonstrate how important he is to the team. Rodri also noted that after displaying remarkable maturity at Euro 2024, expectations surrounding the teenager have naturally grown.
Although Yamal has continued to influence games with his creativity and dribbling, Spain have not shown the same attacking sharpness that made them one of Europe’s most dangerous teams during the European Championship.

Mbappe Eyes Another Piece of World Cup History
At 27 years old, Mbappe remains France’s biggest attacking threat and appears determined to cement his legacy as one of the greatest World Cup players of all time.
With eight goals in the 2026 tournament, he is level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot and sits just one goal behind Messi’s all-time World Cup record of 21 goals.
Mbappe is also aiming to reach his third consecutive World Cup final after winning the title in 2018 and finishing runner-up in 2022, where he famously scored a hat-trick in the final.
If France advances, Mbappe will equal Brazilian legend Cafu’s achievement of appearing in three successive World Cup finals between 1994 and 2002.
Focused on Team Success
Despite the attention surrounding his personal records, Mbappe insists his priority remains helping France win another World Cup.
Following France’s victory over Sweden in the Round of 32, he said his sole focus was guiding the team to the final on July 19.
After defeating Morocco in the quarter-finals, Mbappe emphasized that although he has already experienced both winning and losing a World Cup final, many of his teammates have not, making another title even more meaningful.
Yamal Holds the Edge in Recent Meetings
Although Mbappe possesses greater experience and an impressive World Cup résumé, recent encounters suggest Yamal has often had the upper hand on the pitch.
Representing Barcelona and Spain, Yamal has faced Mbappe in club and international football on multiple occasions over the past two years. According to the reported record, Mbappe has suffered eight defeats and recorded only two victories in their 10 meetings.
With a place in the World Cup final at stake, football fans around the world will be watching to see whether Mbappe’s experience prevails or if Yamal can once again shine on the biggest stage and lead Spain one step closer to lifting the trophy.
