The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) has stated that the sighting of the Zil Hajj moon is expected on the evening of May 17, based on preliminary astronomical calculations. This observation marks the beginning of the Islamic month of Zil Hajj, 1447 Hijri.

SUPARCO’s Astronomical Assessment

According to a spokesperson for SUPARCO, the new moon is expected to be born at 1:01 am on May 17. By sunset the same day, the moon’s age will be approximately 18 hours and 30 minutes, a condition generally considered suitable for visibility in many parts of Pakistan.

The agency further noted that atmospheric conditions appear favourable for crescent sighting, particularly in coastal regions where the time gap between sunset and moonset may extend to around 60 minutes. This extended visibility window increases the likelihood of the moon being observed.

Expected Islamic Calendar Dates

Based on these projections, the first day of Zil Hajj is likely to fall on Monday, May 18. Consequently, Eid ul Adha is expected to be observed on May 27, although these dates remain tentative until officially confirmed.

Final Decision by Ruet-e-Hilal Committee

Despite the scientific forecast, SUPARCO clarified that the final announcement regarding the sighting of the moon will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The committee is the official religious body responsible for confirming the Islamic lunar calendar in Pakistan.

The committee traditionally relies on both astronomical data and physical moon sighting reports from different regions before making an official declaration.

Importance of Moon Sighting

In Pakistan, moon sighting plays a central role in determining Islamic months and religious observances such as Ramadan, Eid ul Fitr, and Eid ul Adha. Each year, the announcement is closely followed by the public, religious scholars, and government institutions.

If the prediction holds, Eid ul Adha 2026 will fall in the last week of May, bringing together millions of Muslims across the country for the annual religious festival of sacrifice.
