Jennifer Lopez is stepping back into the romantic comedy spotlight—but this time, with a fresh and unexpected edge. More than two decades after her iconic role in Maid in Manhattan, Lopez is embracing her rom-com roots while redefining the genre for a new era.
Nostalgia Meets a New Beginning
On April 10, Lopez took to Instagram to build excitement for her upcoming Netflix film Office Romance. She shared behind-the-scenes throwback photos from Maid in Manhattan, featuring co-stars Ralph Fiennes and Stanley Tucci, along with late actors Bob Hoskins and Natasha Richardson.
Reflecting on the memories, Lopez wrote, “So many feelings! Such wonderful memories!” She added that with Office Romance, she is “back in my RomCom era,” calling it a shared “Happy Era” for her and her fans.
A Different Kind of Rom-Com
While the announcement sparked nostalgia, Lopez made it clear that this project will not follow the traditional formula audiences may expect. Speaking previously on Watch What Happens Live, she revealed that Office Romance will have a more daring tone.
“It’s not the typical J.Lo rom-com… it’s a little raunchy,” she said, comparing its humor to films like Knocked Up and There’s Something About Mary.
This signals a shift from her earlier “fairy-tale” style romances to a more modern, bold, and comedic storytelling approach.

Star-Studded Cast and Release Plans
The film will see Lopez starring alongside Brett Goldstein, with a supporting cast that includes Betty Gilpin, Tony Hale, Amy Sedaris, and Edward James Olmos.
Office Romance is expected to premiere on Netflix later this summer, adding to the platform’s growing lineup of original romantic comedies.

Honoring a Beloved Character
Despite the new direction, Lopez hasn’t forgotten her past. In another post, she reflected on her Maid in Manhattan character, Marisa Ventura—a single mother navigating life with strength and dignity.
“Twenty-something years later and I still think about Marisa Ventura,” Lopez shared, highlighting the lasting emotional connection she feels with the role.
A Comeback With a Twist
With Office Romance, Jennifer Lopez is not just revisiting a beloved genre—she’s reinventing it. By blending nostalgia with a more daring comedic style, she aims to deliver a rom-com that resonates with today’s audiences while still honoring the charm that made her earlier films so memorable.
