The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has assured a transparent and impartial inquiry into allegations of violence during a recent raid at Karachi’s Sarafa Bazaar, as tensions continue between law enforcement and the trading community over the operation.
High-Level Meeting with Traders’ Delegation
According to an FIA spokesperson, the Director of the FIA Karachi Zone met with a delegation of the All Pakistan Sarafa Jewellers and Gems Association to address concerns raised following the raid in the Saddar area.
During the meeting, both sides discussed the incident in detail, including complaints from traders regarding alleged misconduct during the operation. Officials said the dialogue focused on restoring trust and reviewing the events surrounding the raid.
Assurance of Legal and Transparent Action
The FIA director assured the delegation that the matter would be investigated thoroughly, fairly, and in line with legal procedures. He stated that all aspects of the case would be examined and that institutional rules and the rule of law would be strictly followed.
Officials also emphasised that the agency’s actions would remain within established legal boundaries, and that professional standards would be maintained throughout the inquiry.
Suspension After Preliminary Findings
In a related development, the SHO of the FIA Anti-Corruption Circle was suspended following initial findings and review of evidence linked to the incident. Authorities said the decision was taken based on early observations and available material.
The suspension comes amid scrutiny over allegations of excessive force during the raid, including reports that CCTV footage surfaced showing a confrontation between an FIA official and a trader.
Background of the Raid
The incident stems from a raid conducted on May 15, during which FIA officials targeted a jewellery shop over suspected silver smuggling. According to initial reports, authorities claimed that out of 178 kilograms of silver expected to be present, only 15 kilograms of locally marked silver were recovered.
The agency further alleged that a significant quantity of silver may have been removed during a disturbance at the scene involving traders and shopkeepers.
Ongoing Inquiry and Market Tensions
The case has sparked concern within the business community, prompting calls for accountability and fair treatment during enforcement operations. Traders have demanded clarity over the use of force, while FIA officials maintain that legal procedures were followed.
Authorities have pledged to complete the inquiry in a transparent manner, aiming to address both enforcement concerns and traders’ grievances as the investigation continues.
