Houston Mayor John Whitmire recognizes Pakistani-American humanitarian Muhammad Saeed Sheikh for more than four decades of community service and efforts to strengthen US-Pakistan relations.
The City of Houston has officially declared July 21, 2026, as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day” in recognition of the decades-long humanitarian and community service of prominent Pakistani-American leader Muhammad Saeed Sheikh.
The announcement was made by Houston Mayor John Whitmire during a special recognition ceremony, where he also praised Sheikh’s contributions to public service and expressed his intention to visit Pakistan during his second term as mayor to promote stronger people-to-people ties and bilateral cooperation between the United States and Pakistan.
Recognition follows Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat award
The ceremony was held after Muhammad Saeed Sheikh recently received Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat (Star of Service), one of the country’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his longstanding humanitarian work.
The event was jointly organized by the Consulate General of Pakistan in Houston and the Houston Karachi Sister City Association, bringing together members of the Pakistani-American community, business leaders and civic representatives.
Mayor Whitmire thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for conferring the prestigious national award on Sheikh, describing his more than 40 years of humanitarian service as an inspiring example of civic leadership and dedication to serving people regardless of their background.
Official proclamation issued by Houston mayor
During the ceremony, Mayor Whitmire presented an official City of Houston proclamation declaring July 21, 2026, as “Muhammad Saeed Sheikh Day.”
The proclamation recognizes Sheikh’s lifelong humanitarian efforts, civic leadership and his role in strengthening friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between Pakistan and the United States.
The mayor also reaffirmed his commitment to expanding cultural and community engagement between the two countries and said he hopes to visit Pakistan during his current term in office.
Pakistani-American community welcomes recognition
Prominent Pakistani-American businessman Syed Javed Anwar praised Sheikh’s lifelong commitment to humanitarian causes, saying he had dedicated decades to serving others without seeking recognition.
He described Sheikh as a deserving recipient of Pakistan’s Sitara-e-Khidmat and said the honor reflected his outstanding contribution to both the Pakistani-American community and society at large.
Pakistan’s Consul General in Houston, Aftab Chaudhry, also commended Sheikh’s work, noting that his humanitarian efforts in both Pakistan and the United States had become a model of community service.
According to Chaudhry, the recognition is not only a personal achievement for Sheikh but also a source of pride for the wider Pakistani-American community.
Sheikh dedicates honor to the community
Accepting the recognition, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh thanked the Government of Pakistan, President Asif Ali Zardari, the Consulate General of Pakistan, community members and the organizers of the ceremony.
He said the honor belonged not only to him but to everyone who had supported his humanitarian initiatives over the years.
“This award represents the collective efforts of our entire community,” Sheikh said.
He added that many individuals had stood by him throughout his humanitarian journey through both financial support and active participation in community projects.
Sheikh also paid special tribute to Syed Javed Anwar, describing him as one of the foremost supporters of his charitable and humanitarian work.
The ceremony highlighted the growing contributions of the Pakistani-American community in the United States and underscored the role of community leaders in strengthening relations between Pakistan and the US through public service, philanthropy and civic engagement.
