ChatGPT experienced a temporary global outage on Saturday, leaving thousands of users unable to access the popular artificial intelligence chatbot before OpenAI restored services later in the day.
The disruption affected users across multiple regions, with many reporting problems logging in, loading conversations or using the platform’s web and mobile applications.
Outage began early Saturday
According to outage tracking website DownDetector, reports of service disruptions began at around 5:00 a.m. ET (10:00 a.m. GMT).
As users searched online for answers, “Is ChatGPT down?” quickly became a trending query on Google, while thousands of users submitted outage reports.
DownDetector data indicated that:
- 79% of reports were related to ChatGPT.
- 9% involved the ChatGPT mobile app.
- 8% were associated with Codex and other OpenAI services.
OpenAI acknowledged elevated error rates
During the disruption, OpenAI updated its official status page, confirming that multiple services were experiencing technical issues.
The company said it was dealing with “elevated error rates” and had implemented mitigation measures.

“We have applied the mitigation and are monitoring the recovery.”
The outage also affected OpenAI’s APIs and its coding platform, Codex, causing interruptions for developers and businesses relying on those services.
Services restored
In its latest update, OpenAI confirmed that all affected services had recovered and were operating normally.
The company’s status page later showed that systems were “fully operational,” indicating that the outage had been resolved.
Not the first disruption
The incident comes only a few weeks after another temporary interruption affected ChatGPT users, highlighting the challenges of maintaining one of the world’s most widely used AI platforms as demand continues to grow.
While the latest outage was resolved within hours, it temporarily disrupted access for thousands of users worldwide before services returned to normal.
