Former Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser has voiced support for physical game releases, saying gaming companies should continue offering boxed editions if that’s what players want, as debate grows over reports that GTA 6 may not include a physical game disc.
Speaking during an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Houser shared his thoughts on the industry’s gradual shift toward digital distribution.

Houser made it clear that while he personally has no strong preference between digital and physical media, he believes companies should respect consumer demand.
“I don’t know that I care, but if people want that, I think companies should provide it. But I don’t know that I personally care,” Houser said.
His comments have been welcomed by fans who continue to push for traditional physical editions of GTA 6.
Digital Releases Offer Major Advantages
Although he supports giving players a choice, Houser also acknowledged the benefits of digital distribution.
According to him, the ability to quickly release updates, patches, and bug fixes has significantly improved the overall quality of modern games.
“As critical as people are of digital releases, the ability to update and fix problems in games has been really useful for the quality of games,” he explained.

GTA 6 Physical Copy Debate Intensifies
Discussion surrounding GTA 6’s physical edition intensified after reports suggested the game would ship without a playable disc, with physical packages instead serving as activation or download products.
The debate gained further momentum after Sony announced it would stop manufacturing physical game discs beginning in January 2028, signaling the industry’s continued move toward digital distribution.
