A Bombay High Court ruling has sentenced former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal to 10 years in prison in a case that has remained in the public spotlight for more than a decade. Tejpal has announced he will challenge the verdict in India’s Supreme Court.
Bombay High Court Overturns Acquittal
An Indian court on Thursday sentenced Tarun Tejpal, the co-founder and former editor-in-chief of investigative magazine Tehelka, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment after convicting him in a rape case involving a former junior colleague.
The verdict came after the Bombay High Court overturned a 2021 acquittal by a trial court in Goa, which had cleared Tejpal of charges including rape, sexual harassment, and wrongful restraint.
Allegations Date Back to 2013
The case stems from an incident in November 2013, when Tejpal was accused of raping a junior journalist inside the elevator of a five-star hotel in Goa during a media event.
The allegations attracted nationwide attention and sparked widespread debate about workplace safety, sexual misconduct, and accountability in India’s media industry.
Court Orders Jail Term and Fine
According to Goa Police investigator Sunita Sawant, who led the investigation, the court sentenced Tejpal to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and granted him two weeks to surrender before authorities.
The court also imposed a fine of approximately $5,250, in addition to the prison sentence.
Tejpal to Challenge Verdict
Speaking to reporters after the judgment, the 63-year-old former editor said he would appeal the conviction before the Supreme Court of India.
Tejpal alleged that he had been subjected to a politically motivated campaign for more than a decade, claiming the case was part of a “political vendetta.”

Earlier in the proceedings, he had described the incident as “a lapse of judgement.” Following his arrest in 2013, he spent seven months in jail before being granted bail by the Supreme Court.
He later maintained that the prosecution against him was politically motivated and linked it to the **Bharatiya Janata Party> (BJP)-led government in Goa.
Case Came Amid National Debate on Sexual Violence
The Tejpal case emerged during a period of heightened public scrutiny over India’s handling of sexual assault cases.
Just a year earlier, the fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old student on a moving bus in New Delhi in December 2012 had triggered nationwide protests and international condemnation. The incident prompted the Indian government to strengthen rape laws and introduce broader legal reforms aimed at improving protections for women.
Against this backdrop, the allegations against one of India’s most prominent investigative journalists drew significant public and media attention.
Impact on Tehelka
The case dealt a severe blow to the reputation of Tehelka, a publication once widely respected for its investigative journalism, anti-corruption exposés, and advocacy for women’s rights and social justice.
Although the magazine continues to operate under new leadership, it has struggled to regain the influence and credibility it enjoyed before the 2013 allegations against its former editor.
