Avengers: Endgame has made an unexpected return to the top of the box office, seven years after its original theatrical release.
The Marvel blockbuster returned to cinemas as Avengers: Endgame Encore, earning around $26 million in North America over the weekend.
The film was screened in 3,060 cinemas and collected approximately $11.2 million on Friday, marking a strong performance for a movie that originally hit theatres in 2019.
New footage draws Marvel fans back
Marvel added new footage and additional material to the re-release, including content shown after the credits.
Some of the newly added material is connected to the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans another reason to return to a story they have already seen.
The additional scenes also helped build anticipation for the next instalment in the Avengers franchise, which is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2026.
The timing of the re-release comes as Marvel moves closer to the release of its next major Avengers film, keeping the franchise in the spotlight.

Robert Pattinson film opens in second place
Robert Pattinson’s new film Primetime opened in second place with approximately $19 million.
The A24 thriller earned around $2.8 million from preview screenings before taking in about $6 million on Friday.
Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame Encore also finished ahead of Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast and Forgotten Island at the box office.
The strong performance of the re-release highlights the continued interest surrounding Marvel’s Avengers storyline and the enduring appeal of one of the franchise’s biggest films.
