Brazilian football star Neymar has been handed a two-match suspension for covering his mouth during an on-field confrontation in Santos’ 1-1 draw against Bahia in the Brazilian Serie A on Saturday.
Brazil’s Superior Court of Sports Justice (STJD) announced the decision on Wednesday, finding the 34-year-old forward guilty of violating a rule prohibiting players from covering their mouths during confrontations on the pitch.
The regulation, widely associated with the case involving Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr., aims to improve transparency during on-field disputes and help officials identify potentially discriminatory or abusive remarks.
Neymar Sent Off After Confrontation
Neymar was sent off following an altercation with Bahia midfielder Rodrigo Nestor during Saturday’s match.
According to the referee’s report cited by the sports tribunal, Neymar ran towards the visiting team’s bench after receiving his red card in an apparent attempt to confront his opponent. His teammates reportedly had to restrain him.
The tribunal subsequently imposed a two-match suspension over the mouth-covering incident.
Neymar and Santos have the right to appeal the ruling.
Santos Captain to Miss Three Matches
The latest punishment adds to Neymar’s existing suspension for accumulating three yellow cards.
As a result, he will miss Wednesday’s league fixture against Palmeiras, followed by two additional matches under the tribunal’s ruling.

The combined suspensions mean Neymar is expected to be unavailable for Santos’ next three games, potentially affecting the club’s plans during a crucial stage of the season.
Another Disciplinary Setback for Neymar
The suspension comes three months after Neymar became the first player in Brazil’s top flight to be temporarily removed from the field under a new rule being tested in the league to discourage goalkeepers from wasting time.
The former Brazil captain has faced disciplinary setbacks as he continues his career with Santos.
With the latest ruling keeping him out of action, Neymar is not expected to return to competitive football until late November, although an appeal could affect the suspension.
