British Man Claims He Has Not Slept for Two Years

Doctors baffled as former train conductor describes life with extreme, unexplained insomnia

A Life Turned Upside Down Overnight

A British man, Oliver Elves, has revealed that he has been unable to sleep for the past two years, despite taking strong prescription sleeping pills. His mysterious condition has left doctors puzzled and has turned his once-ordinary life into what he describes as “an endless nightmare.”

Elves, who previously worked as a train conductor and was living a quiet life in a recently purchased four-bedroom apartment, said everything changed suddenly one night when he simply could not fall asleep. At first, he assumed it was a temporary issue, perhaps caused by stress or fatigue. But days stretched into weeks, and weeks into months. More than 21 months later, he says he still has not experienced a single moment of real rest.

Living in a Body That Feels Like It’s Burning

Describing his ordeal, Elves said:

“It feels as though I am trapped in a body that is burning from the inside out. Every day is a struggle. My mind and body beg for rest, but sleep never comes.”

Despite consulting numerous medical specialists, he has yet to receive a clear diagnosis. The lack of answers has left him not only physically exhausted but also emotionally drained. “I have seen doctors again and again, but none can tell me why this is happening,” he added.

Insomnia and Its Potential Consequences

Insomnia, or the inability to sleep, is one of the most common sleep disorders worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly one in three adults reports some difficulty sleeping. However, long-term, total sleeplessness such as Elves describes is virtually unheard of.

Severe insomnia can lead to memory problems, difficulty concentrating, weakened immunity, and increased risk of heart disease and depression. In extreme cases, prolonged lack of sleep has been linked to hallucinations, paranoia, and even life-threatening complications.

Experts note that while most people experience short bouts of sleeplessness during stressful periods, going years without any sleep is medically extraordinary. Some specialists suggest that in such cases, patients may experience “microsleeps” — brief, unconscious lapses into sleep lasting a few seconds — without realizing it. However, Elves insists that he has had no rest whatsoever.

Medical Mystery Leaves Experts Searching for Answers

Doctors have so far failed to provide an explanation for Elves’s condition. Some suspect it could be linked to rare neurological disorders, such as Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) — a genetic disease that destroys the brain’s ability to regulate sleep. However, such cases are exceptionally rare, with fewer than 50 families worldwide known to carry the defective gene.

Others believe his case may involve an undiagnosed psychiatric or physiological condition. Without a proper diagnosis, treatment remains out of reach, leaving Elves in limbo.

A Struggle Against Isolation

Beyond the physical suffering, Elves says the experience has deeply affected his mental health and social life. Friends and relatives struggle to understand his condition, and he often feels isolated. “It’s like I am living in a world where everyone else rests and recovers, while I am trapped in endless wakefulness,” he said.

Despite his challenges, he continues to seek medical advice and hopes his case might attract attention from sleep specialists worldwide. For now, he remains determined to share his story, both to raise awareness and to push for answers.

An Unanswered Question

Oliver Elves’s situation highlights the mysteries still surrounding human sleep, one of the most essential biological processes. While science has uncovered much about why rest is vital, cases like his show how little is still understood about what happens when the body simply refuses to shut down.

For Elves, the nights — and days — remain long and restless. His story continues to serve as a haunting reminder of what life without sleep might mean.
