Nigeria: Over 60 Dead After Overloaded Boat Sinks in Niger State

A tragic boat sinking in Niger State, Nigeria, has resulted in the deaths of at least 60 people. According to Nigerian rescue authorities, the boat was carrying significantly more passengers than its safe capacity, which led to the disaster.

Rescue teams responded promptly to the incident and managed to save dozens of individuals from drowning. However, despite their efforts, many passengers, including women and children, could not be saved.

The Nigerian National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that over 100 people were on board the vessel at the time of the accident. The exact cause of the sinking is still under investigation, but initial reports indicate that overloading played a major role.

This tragedy adds to the growing list of maritime accidents in the region, where unsafe boats and poor safety regulations often contribute to loss of life.

In a related incident near Yemen’s coast, a similar boat accident has claimed the lives of 68 people, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by passengers on overcrowded boats in various parts of the world.

Authorities in Nigeria and neighboring countries have urged stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
