The actor and singer says the character of Bostan Khan challenged him to step outside his comfort zone as he prepares for his return to screen acting in a mafia-themed web series.
KARACHI: Pakistani actor and singer Ali Zafar is preparing to explore a completely different side of his acting career with his upcoming web series, Gangs of Khorasan, in which he will portray a mysterious gangster named Bostan Khan.
Speaking exclusively to The Express Tribune, Zafar revealed that the challenging nature of the character was the main reason he agreed to join the project.
“I’ve waited for a character that would take me far from my comfort zone. Out of all the scripts I read, Bostan Khan was the one that dared me. And I don’t walk away from a dare,” he said.
Known for his romantic roles, stylish appearance and musical performances, Zafar is now stepping into darker territory with a character that represents a significant departure from the roles audiences have traditionally associated with him.
Ali Zafar’s Transformation into Bostan Khan
The actor recently offered fans a glimpse of his new appearance on social media, revealing a rugged look featuring a thick moustache, distinctive glasses and an intense personality.
Introducing himself as Bostan Khan, Zafar shared a bold message:
“Warned you not to mess with me. My world. My rules. I AM BOSTAAN KHAN!”
The transformation quickly attracted attention, particularly because of the contrast between his new gangster appearance and his familiar romantic screen image.
Describing Gangs of Khorasan, Zafar called it a mafia-themed web series and said the project was the first of its kind in Pakistan.
Although details about the storyline and individual characters remain under wraps, the series is expected to explore the world of organised crime.

Star-Studded Cast Brings Together Leading Pakistani Actors
Gangs of Khorasan features an ensemble cast that includes Feroze Khan, Humaima Malick, Sonya Hussyn and Syed Jibran alongside Ali Zafar.
Feroze Khan has earned recognition through popular television dramas such as Khaani, Khuda Aur Mohabbat 3 and Akhara. Humaima Malick gained wider attention through Shoaib Mansoor’s film Bol and later appeared in several Pakistani and Bollywood productions, including The Legend of Maula Jatt.
Sonya Hussyn is known for her performances in projects such as Aisi Hai Tanhai, Ishq Zahe Naseeb and Deemak, while Syed Jibran has remained a familiar face on television through dramas including Chup Raho, Neem and Pagal Khana.
The series is produced by Anas Ali, with direction associated with Hamza Ansari. The combination of established performers and a crime-focused storyline has already generated interest among entertainment audiences.
A Major Acting Return After Teefa in Trouble
Zafar’s appearance in Gangs of Khorasan marks a significant return to live-action screen acting after several years.
His last major live-action film as a leading actor was Teefa in Trouble (2018), opposite Maya Ali. The film was a commercial success and also marked his debut as a film producer and writer.
In 2023, he lent his voice to the animated film Allahyar and the 100 Flowers of God.
His decision to take on Bostan Khan therefore represents an important opportunity to reconnect with audiences through a different genre and demonstrate a wider acting range.

From Music Sensation to International Film Star
Ali Zafar began his career in Pakistani television before establishing himself as one of the country’s popular singers.
His music career gained momentum with the release of his debut album, Huqa Pani, in 2003. The album’s hit single Channo became a major success, topping music charts and earning him recognition as a singer and composer.
He later entered Bollywood with the 2010 satire Tere Bin Laden. His performance received critical appreciation and earned him nominations in the Best Male Debut category, including at the Filmfare Awards.
Zafar subsequently appeared in several Indian films, including Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Chashme Baddoor and Dear Zindagi.
Alongside acting and music, he has remained active through concerts, international tours, stage performances, humanitarian activities and brand endorsements.
In recognition of his contributions to arts and music, he received Pakistan’s Pride of Performance award on March 23, 2021.
Why Gangs of Khorasan Could Be a Career Turning Point
For Zafar, the appeal of Gangs of Khorasan appears to go beyond returning to acting. His decision to portray Bostan Khan reflects a willingness to experiment with unfamiliar characters and challenge the image audiences have associated with him for years.
With its crime-based storyline, recognisable cast and Ali Zafar’s dramatic transformation, the web series is shaping up to be an interesting addition to Pakistan’s entertainment landscape.
Audiences will now be watching to see how effectively the singer-actor brings his new gangster character to life on screen.
