Billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates is set to appear before the US House Oversight Committee in a closed-door session on Wednesday, June 10, where lawmakers are expected to question him about his past interactions with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The testimony comes amid renewed scrutiny after Gates’ name appeared multiple times in previously released files connected to Epstein, raising questions about the extent and nature of their relationship.
Why did Gates continue meeting Epstein after his conviction?
One of the central issues Congress is expected to examine is why Gates maintained contact with Epstein even after his 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor.
Reports suggest the two met on multiple occasions after that point, including a documented dinner in 2010, a reported visit to Norway in 2012, and a breakfast meeting in 2014. Gates has previously described his association with Epstein as a “huge mistake,” but lawmakers are expected to press him on why the relationship continued for years after Epstein’s conviction became public.
Allegations of possible blackmail
Another area of inquiry involves claims that Epstein may have attempted to use sensitive information for leverage. According to documents cited in reports, Epstein allegedly suggested he had facilitated inappropriate encounters involving Gates and made other personal claims. Gates has strongly denied these allegations, calling them “absolutely absurd.”
Congress is expected to ask whether Epstein ever attempted to pressure or influence him using such claims.
Questions about awareness and interactions
Lawmakers also want clarity on the nature of Gates’ interactions with Epstein and his associates. While Gates has denied visiting Epstein’s private island or engaging in any illicit activity, he is known to have flown on Epstein’s private aircraft and been photographed with him on several occasions.

Officials, including members of the Oversight Committee, are expected to ask who else was present during these meetings and what Gates understood about Epstein’s broader network at the time.
What did Gates know?
A key line of questioning will focus on what Gates knew—or should have known—about Epstein’s criminal background. Despite Gates’ status as one of the world’s most influential figures, he has maintained that he had limited awareness of Epstein’s activities.
Committee Chair James Comer has indicated that the purpose of the questioning is to establish “what he knew and if he saw certain things,” rather than to assume wrongdoing.
Denials of misconduct
To date, Bill Gates has denied any involvement in Epstein’s criminal conduct and has consistently stated that his association with Epstein was a mistake in judgment.
The upcoming testimony is expected to add further scrutiny to one of the most controversial associations involving a major public figure in recent years.
