China and the United States have agreed to establish a bilateral communication channel for incidents involving advanced artificial intelligence, following a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.
The White House said the two countries also agreed to establish a dialogue focused on the risks and benefits of what they called “super intelligence”, with the next exchange scheduled to take place by November 2026.
The agreement was among the outcomes announced after Xi’s state visit to Washington, which covered artificial intelligence, trade and wider international issues.
US, China establish AI incident channel
The White House said the new communication channel will provide a mechanism for the two countries to address incidents involving advanced AI systems.
The two governments also agreed to use the term “super intelligence” for the emerging technologies covered by the new dialogue.
The development follows discussions between senior US and Chinese officials earlier this month over AI safety and emergency communication protocols. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent had previously said Washington was seeking an incident line for communicating serious AI-related safety issues.
The White House said the new dialogue will allow the two sides to exchange views on the risks and potential benefits associated with super intelligence.
Trade agreements announced
The summit also produced several economic arrangements between Washington and Beijing.
According to the White House, the two countries agreed on recommendations for more favourable tariff treatment covering $30 billion of non-sensitive goods in each direction.
China also agreed to import at least 10 million metric tons of US coal in both 2027 and 2028.

The countries further agreed to operationalise government-to-government Boards of Trade and Investment to address trade and investment-related issues.
The United States and China also said they would continue working on supply-chain concerns involving rare earths and other critical minerals.
Trump and Xi to continue dialogue
Trump and Xi agreed to continue their high-level engagement, with both leaders intending to attend summits hosted by each other’s countries.
The White House said the two sides agreed to build a relationship based on “strategic stability” and the principles of respect, fairness and reciprocity.
Trump described the meeting as one of “Friendship, Strength, and Success” and said the talks had produced positive developments for both countries.
The US president hosted Xi during a state visit that included a formal welcome ceremony, military review, flyover, state dinner and other official events.
The two leaders also visited the US National Archives, where they viewed the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The latest agreements come as Washington and Beijing continue efforts to manage competition over trade, technology and security while maintaining direct communication between their leaders.
