ISLAMABAD: Islamabad International Airport has achieved a major milestone by becoming Pakistan’s first fully cashless airport, signalling a significant step toward digitalisation in the country’s aviation sector. Under the new system, all payments at the airport — including airline ticketing, parking, food outlets, retail shops, and duty-free stores — must be made through digital platforms, eliminating the use of cash entirely.

Digital Payment Options

Passengers can now pay using a variety of methods, including digital wallets, QR codes, mobile banking apps, as well as debit and credit cards. Airport authorities have stated that this initiative aims to improve efficiency, transparency, and overall convenience for travellers.

Mobile App and Baggage Tracking

Alongside the cashless system, a modern mobile application has been launched, allowing passengers to track lost luggage from anywhere in the world. According to Aftab Gilani, Chief Operating Officer and Airport Manager, the combination of digital payments and baggage tracking will not only make travel smoother but also raise the airport’s international profile.

Privatisation and Modernisation Efforts

Senior Joint Director Commercial Malik Amjad described the initiative as a major step in modernising airport services in Pakistan. The development comes shortly after the federal government included Islamabad International Airport in its active privatisation programme in January, a move that aligns with the ongoing privatisation efforts for Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport and Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.

Officials emphasise that adopting digital payments is part of a broader strategy to bring Pakistani airports in line with international standards, improving passenger experience, operational efficiency, and accountability.

With Islamabad International Airport now fully cashless, Pakistan has taken a significant step toward modernising its aviation infrastructure, offering travellers a safer, faster, and more seamless airport experience.
