Pakistan’s Armed Forces on Monday commemorated the martyrdom anniversary of Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed, recipient of the Nishan-e-Haider, paying tribute to his extraordinary bravery and ultimate sacrifice during the 1999 Kargil conflict.

According to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, along with Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, joined the armed forces in honouring the fallen hero and reaffirmed their commitment to the nation’s martyrs.

Remembering a Hero of the Kargil Conflict

The ISPR described Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed as a symbol of unwavering courage, devotion, and patriotism, recalling his exceptional conduct during the Kargil conflict in 1999.

According to the military’s media wing, on July 7, 1999, he defended his forward post against repeated enemy attacks despite facing intense combat. Even after sustaining critical injuries, he refused to be evacuated and continued leading his fellow soldiers until he embraced martyrdom in the line of duty.

The statement said his determination and leadership under extremely difficult battlefield conditions remain an enduring example of courage and selfless service.

Sacrifice Continues to Inspire

The ISPR stated that Havildar Lalak Jan’s sacrifice remains a shining symbol of resilience, duty, and commitment to defending Pakistan’s sovereignty.

It added that his legacy continues to inspire officers and soldiers of the Pakistan Armed Forces, serving as a reminder of the values of honour, discipline, and devotion to the nation.

The armed forces also reaffirmed their resolve to safeguard the country’s security and territorial integrity with the same spirit of courage demonstrated by the Nishan-e-Haider recipient.

Who Was Havildar Lalak Jan Shaheed?

Havildar Lalak Jan was born on April 1, 1967, and joined the Pakistan Army on December 10, 1984. He later served with the Northern Light Infantry Regiment, a unit that played a significant role during the Kargil conflict.

When fighting intensified in 1999, he volunteered to defend one of the most strategically important forward positions in the rugged mountainous terrain.

Throughout the conflict, he and his comrades successfully repelled repeated attacks while inflicting heavy losses on the opposing forces.

Awarded Pakistan’s Highest Military Honour

On July 7, 1999, heavy mortar fire struck his position, leaving him critically wounded. Despite his injuries, Havildar Lalak Jan refused evacuation and continued fighting until he was martyred.

In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, unwavering commitment, and supreme sacrifice in the defence of Pakistan, he was posthumously awarded the Nishan-e-Haider, the country’s highest military gallantry award.

More than two decades later, his courage and dedication continue to be remembered as one of the most inspiring chapters in Pakistan’s military history.
