Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds has opened up about a traumatic accident from his teenage years that left him with multiple broken bones and required weeks of hospitalization.
Speaking in a recent interview with GQ alongside his Wrexham AFC co-owner Rob McElhenney, the 49-year-old actor reflected on the incident, which occurred when he was just 18 years old in Vancouver.
Reynolds described the experience as one of the most life-altering moments of his life, revealing that he was hit by a drunk driver while walking home after making the responsible decision not to drive.
Decision Not to Drive Before the Crash
Recalling the events leading up to the accident, Reynolds said he had been drinking and decided it would be unsafe to get behind the wheel, even though his home was only a few blocks away.
“I looked at my car for a second and thought, ‘I’m not going to drive anywhere, even if it’s four blocks home,'” he said.
After leaving his car behind and crossing the road, he was struck by a vehicle driven by an intoxicated driver.
“I got run over by a drunk driver after making a firmly positive and wise decision for a young, 18-year-old male,” Reynolds recalled.
Four Weeks in Hospital
The Deadpool & Wolverine star said the impact of the collision was so severe that he spent four weeks recovering in hospital.
According to Reynolds, he suffered fractures to every bone on the left side of his body. He also noted that the collision was so powerful that the driver’s vehicle was rendered inoperable.

“Spent four weeks in the hospital. Broke every bone in my left side. He hit me so hard, his car was not operational,” he said, while expressing gratitude to the doctor who treated him during his recovery.
Accident Left a Lasting Impact
This is not the first time Reynolds has spoken about the incident. In a 2011 interview, he revealed that he lost consciousness immediately after the crash and did not regain consciousness until three days later in the hospital.
Looking back on the life-changing experience, the actor acknowledged that the injuries have continued to affect him over the years.
“Since then, I’ve been a rickety, broken mess,” Reynolds said, reflecting on the lasting physical consequences of the devastating accident.
The actor’s account highlights the unpredictable nature of road accidents and serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by impaired driving, even when others make responsible choices.
