KARACHI: The Sindh government has declared Wednesday, July 29, 2026, a public holiday across the province to commemorate the annual Urs of the renowned Sufi poet Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.
The announcement was made through an official notification issued by the provincial government on Monday.
Holiday applies to all provincial government institutions
According to the notification, the public holiday will be observed by all provincial government offices, autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, and local councils operating under the administrative control of the Sindh government.
The notification stated:
“The Government of Sindh declares 14th Safar 1448 AH/29th July, 2026 (Wednesday) as a public holiday throughout the province of Sindh on the occasion of the Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai for all government offices, autonomous bodies, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations, local councils under the administrative control of the Government of Sindh.”
Three-day Urs celebrations
The annual Urs of Hazrat Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai begins every year on 14th Safar, the second month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar, and continues for three days.
The celebrations attract thousands of devotees, scholars, poets, and visitors from across Pakistan, who gather at the saint’s shrine in Bhit Shah to pay tribute to his spiritual and literary legacy.
Cultural and literary events planned
As part of the three-day Urs festivities, several cultural and literary events will be organized, including:
- Poetry recitals and marathons
- Literary conferences and seminars
- Sufi music performances
- Discussions on Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai’s poetry and philosophy
The annual event celebrates the enduring contributions of one of Sindh’s greatest Sufi poets, whose teachings continue to promote peace, spirituality, love, and harmony across generations.
