Washington: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his controversial claim that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni repeatedly requested a photograph with him during the G7 summit in France, escalating a diplomatic spat triggered by earlier comments.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump insisted that Meloni “asked, over and over, for a picture” during the summit, reinforcing remarks that had already sparked criticism in Europe.
Earlier comments sparked backlash in Italy
The dispute began after Trump, in an interview with Italian media, suggested that Meloni had “begged” for a photo with him, saying he only agreed out of sympathy.
The comments were quickly rejected by Meloni, who expressed astonishment and said the claims were “completely made up.” She also pushed back against Trump’s broader criticism, accusing him of showing greater deference toward adversaries than traditional Western allies.
The exchange added to already sensitive diplomatic dynamics between Washington and European leaders attending the G7 meeting in Evian-les-Bains.
Trump links comments to politics and Iran conflict
In his latest posts, Trump went beyond the photo controversy and criticised Meloni’s political standing in Italy, suggesting her popularity had declined after distancing herself from the United States.
He also referenced recent US military actions against Iran, claiming Washington had “defeated” Iran militarily and arguing that European leaders were now seeking closer relations with the US after the conflict.
Trump further alleged that Meloni had previously restricted US military logistics by denying access to Italian airbases during operations related to the Iran situation—claims that have not been independently verified.
Growing diplomatic friction within NATO allies
The exchange comes at a time of heightened geopolitical sensitivity following the US-Iran conflict and ongoing efforts to stabilise relations in the Middle East. Analysts say such public disputes between allied leaders risk complicating coordination within NATO and broader Western diplomacy.
While Trump has maintained that US actions have strengthened its global position, critics argue that his remarks could strain relations with key European partners.
No official response from Italian government
As of now, there has been no formal statement from the Italian government responding to Trump’s latest comments. However, earlier reactions from Prime Minister Meloni made clear her rejection of his version of events.
The episode continues to draw international attention, highlighting ongoing tensions in transatlantic political discourse during a period of global diplomatic realignment.
