AUSTIN: Max Verstappen is aiming to spoil Kimi Antonelli’s title celebrations by securing a third consecutive victory at the United States Grand Prix this weekend.

The four-time world champion has won the last two races, the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia and the Singapore Grand Prix, strengthening his position as a contender for further success just as Mercedes driver Antonelli approaches a potential championship triumph.

Verstappen won from pole position at the Circuit of the Americas last year. The Dutchman is now chasing another victory at the Texas circuit, where Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed considerable success.

Despite Red Bull’s recent improvement, Verstappen has remained cautious about his prospects.

“The last few weekends have been great. I just take it race by race and we’ll see how it goes there. It’s another very different kind of track,” he said after his Singapore victory.

Verstappen has secured seven podium finishes in his last eight races, including two wins and three second-place finishes. His recent performances could complicate Antonelli’s attempt to become Italy’s first Formula One world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

Antonelli Closes In on Championship

Antonelli enters the Texas race with a significant advantage over his Mercedes teammate George Russell, whom he leads by 102 points.

The Italian could secure the championship this weekend if he wins the race, Russell finishes outside the top nine and Hamilton fails to finish in the top four.

At 20, Antonelli is attempting to achieve what would be a historic milestone. Sebastian Vettel became Formula One’s youngest world champion in 2010 with Red Bull, when Antonelli was just four years old.

Despite the growing attention surrounding his title prospects, Antonelli insists that his focus remains on performing at his best.

“I know it’s very close and I know it’s there, but I need to make sure I keep doing my best and go out and win and perform in my best way,” he said.

McLaren deputy team principal Bradley Lord compared Antonelli’s position to a tennis player approaching match point, describing the challenge of managing expectations while remaining focused on the competition.

Russell and Hamilton Could Complicate the Race

Russell will be looking to reduce Antonelli’s advantage, while Hamilton could also emerge as a serious contender at one of his favourite circuits.

The Ferrari driver is seeking a record sixth victory at the Circuit of the Americas and a seventh win in the United States Grand Prix.

Both Mercedes drivers are expected to run the team’s latest upgrades as the championship enters a decisive three-race stretch covering Texas, Mexico and Brazil.

However, Ferrari and Red Bull could challenge Mercedes for the advantage, particularly if track conditions produce unexpected results.

Bumpy Circuit Could Test Drivers

The Circuit of the Americas is known for its challenging layout, and the bumpy surface could become a major factor over the weekend.

Verstappen has already expressed concern about the conditions after watching the World Endurance Championship race at the venue.

“From what I saw in the world endurance championship race in Austin, the track is incredibly bumpy and I will probably need to order a new spine after the weekend – or become like Robocop. It’s crazy,” he said.

The demanding conditions could make tyre management, car setup and driver consistency particularly important.

With Verstappen chasing another victory and Antonelli seeking to move closer to the championship, the United States Grand Prix could prove pivotal for both drivers. A strong result for Red Bull could delay the Italian’s celebrations, while a successful weekend for Mercedes could bring Antonelli closer to a historic title.
