MOSCOW: A senior Russian military official, identified as Colonel Damir Davydov, was killed in a car bomb explosion near Moscow, according to Russian media reports.

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday at around 5:30 a.m. local time in the city of Balashikha, near the capital. The explosion targeted a BMW vehicle in which the officer was travelling close to his residence.

Authorities have not yet issued an official confirmation or detailed statement regarding the attack.

How the Blast Happened

Local reports suggest that an explosive device had been planted underneath the vehicle. The bomb detonated as the car was in motion, causing a powerful explosion that engulfed the vehicle in flames.

Footage circulating on Russian media and social platforms reportedly shows the vehicle bursting into fire before crashing into another parked car nearby.

Eyewitnesses attempted to rescue the driver from the wreckage, but he was declared dead at the scene, according to Russian-language Telegram channel Mash.

Who Was Col Damir Davydov?

Damir Davydov, aged 57, was described as a high-ranking officer in the Russian armed forces.

He reportedly held responsibility within the military’s artillery and missile depot supply directorate, a role linked to logistics and the management of weapons supply systems, according to reporting cited by international media.

While not widely known publicly before the incident, his position placed him within Russia’s broader military logistics structure during the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Part of a Pattern of Targeted Killings

The killing is being viewed in the context of a series of attacks and assassinations targeting Russian military officials and pro-war figures since the start of the Russia–Ukraine conflict.

In recent years, several Russian officers and officials have reportedly been targeted in explosions, shootings, and sabotage incidents, both inside Russia and in occupied territories.

A similar car bombing occurred in the same area roughly a year earlier, when Lt. Gen. Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior Russian military official, was killed.

Investigation Underway

As of now, neither Russian nor Ukrainian authorities have publicly claimed responsibility for the attack. Investigations are expected to focus on whether the explosion was part of an organized operation or an isolated targeted strike.

Given the sensitive nature of the case and the ongoing war, the incident is likely to further heighten security concerns among Russian military leadership near Moscow.

The death of Col Damir Davydov adds to a growing list of high-profile security incidents involving Russian military personnel. While details remain limited, the attack underscores the continuing risks and instability linked to the broader Russia–Ukraine conflict and its spillover effects inside Russian territory.
