The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast dust storms, windstorms, and thunderstorms with rain across the upper and central parts of the country from June 11 to June 13. The weather system may also bring isolated heavy downpours and hailstorms in several regions.
Weather system influenced by western disturbance and Arabian Sea moisture
According to the Met Office, a western disturbance is expected to enter the upper parts of the country on June 11 and remain active until June 13. At the same time, moist air currents from the Arabian Sea are likely to penetrate central and upper regions, intensifying weather activity across multiple provinces.
Areas expected to be affected
In Punjab, cities including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Multan, and several others are likely to experience scattered dust storms, windstorms, and rain with thunderstorms. The weather may occur intermittently but could become intense in certain spells.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, districts such as Peshawar, Swat, Abbottabad, Mardan, Kohat, Bannu, and Dir are expected to receive similar stormy conditions.
Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir are also forecast to experience rain-wind and thunderstorm activity. The PMD has warned that isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms may hit areas including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Skardu, Hunza, and Gilgit.
In Balochistan, northeastern districts such as Zhob, Ziarat, Barkhan, and Qila Saifullah may see dust storms and rainfall. Meanwhile, in Sindh, strong winds and dust storms are expected in regions including Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Khairpur, and surrounding areas.
Flood and landslide warnings issued
The PMD has cautioned that heavy rainfall could trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas of major cities, including Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad. Flash floods may also develop in vulnerable regions of Punjab.
In hilly areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir, landslides are also possible due to intense rainfall.
Advisory for public and authorities
Authorities have been urged to remain alert and take preventive measures to avoid any untoward incidents. Farmers have been advised to protect crops from possible damage, while tourists and travelers have been encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
The PMD also warned that strong winds, lightning, and hailstorms could damage weak structures such as solar panels, electric poles, and billboards, particularly in exposed areas.
