The United Arab Emirates has officially launched its first-ever passenger rail service, marking a major milestone in the country’s transport infrastructure. The new national railway network is designed to connect all emirates, significantly reduce travel times, and provide a more efficient and sustainable mode of transportation.

Inauguration and Initial Phase

The service was inaugurated on Monday by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the Mohamed bin Zayed City Passenger Train Station. This launch marks the beginning of a new era in the UAE’s public transport system, reflecting the country’s long-term vision for integrated and modern mobility.

According to officials, the introductory phase of passenger operations between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah will begin on June 30. The journey on this route will take just 1 hour and 45 minutes (105 minutes), offering a significant reduction compared to traditional road travel times.

Fares and Passenger Experience

Ticket prices for the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route will start at 55 dirhams (approximately $15) for Comfort Class. For passengers seeking enhanced services, Premium Class will be available at 120 dirhams. Authorities have emphasized that the rail system is designed to offer a comfortable, modern, and reliable travel experience, with a strong focus on efficiency and passenger convenience.

Planned Network Expansion

The railway network will be expanded in phases across the country. Stations in Dubai and Al Dhaid, a town in the emirate of Sharjah, are scheduled to open on September 30. Further expansion is planned for Al Dhafra in Abu Dhabi’s western region near the Saudi border, with services expected to begin in December 2026. Sharjah’s main station is also set to join the network in March 2027.

Economic and Strategic Importance

Officials have highlighted that the project is not only a transportation initiative but also a key driver of economic growth, tourism development, and urban expansion. By connecting major cities and regions, the railway aims to improve business mobility, reduce road congestion, and promote environmentally sustainable travel across the UAE.

Overall, the launch of the UAE’s first passenger rail service represents a transformative step toward a more connected and modern national transport system.
