The search for Nolan Xavier Wells, the 18-year-old Mississippi teenager who disappeared during Fourth of July celebrations, has ended in tragedy after authorities confirmed that a body believed to be his was found near Horn Island on Monday morning.
The discovery came after an extensive search involving local, state, and federal agencies that had been working around the clock since Wells was reported missing over the weekend.
Body Found Near the Area Where He Disappeared
According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, a park ranger discovered the body at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Monday near the same location where Wells was last seen.
Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter said the body is believed to be that of Nolan Xavier Wells, pending official confirmation through standard procedures.
Shortly afterward, Wells’ family shared the heartbreaking news on social media, confirming that their son had been found.
Disappeared During Fourth of July Celebrations
Authorities said Nolan Wells was reported missing late on Saturday, July 4, after travelling to Horn Island with a group of friends in a small boat to celebrate Independence Day.
Family members said he was last seen at around 3:00 p.m. that day on the barrier island, located off Mississippi’s Gulf Coast.
When he failed to return, his mother contacted authorities, prompting a large-scale search operation.
Large Search Operation Launched
The search involved multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and the United States Coast Guard.
Search teams used boats, aircraft, and other specialized resources to comb the waters surrounding Horn Island in an effort to locate the missing teenager.
The coordinated operation continued until the body was recovered on Monday morning.

Officials said the investigation into Wells’ death remains ongoing.
