Mexican social media influencer Cesar Gastelum was shot dead while livestreaming with friends outside a fast-food restaurant, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The motive behind the killing remains unknown, and police have launched an investigation to identify and arrest those responsible.

The incident occurred in Culiacán, the capital of the northwestern state of Sinaloa, where authorities say criminal violence has intensified in recent months due to rival groups competing for influence.

Attack Captured During Livestream

According to footage from the livestream, reviewed by Reuters, two helmeted men riding a motorcycle approached the group before opening fire directly at Gastelum.

The attack unfolded within seconds, abruptly ending the livestream and shocking his followers on social media.

Gastelum had built a significant online presence, attracting more than 600,000 followers on TikTok, where he regularly shared videos with his audience.

Authorities Launch Investigation

Security officials in Sinaloa confirmed Gastelum’s death and said a large-scale security operation had been launched to locate those involved in the attack.

Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the killing, but officials have not yet announced any arrests or identified suspects.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

Rising Violence in Culiacán

Gastelum’s killing adds to a growing list of violent incidents reported in Culiacán, a city that has experienced heightened insecurity amid clashes between rival criminal groups.

The recent surge in violence has raised concerns among residents and authorities, with law enforcement agencies continuing operations aimed at restoring security in the region.

Social Media Personalities Increasingly Targeted

The killing is the latest in a series of attacks involving social media personalities in Mexico.

In 2025, beauty influencer Valeria Márquez was also fatally shot during a livestream in the western state of Jalisco.

Authorities later arrested an alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in connection with Márquez’s killing. The suspect was also identified as a suspect in the murder of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo, according to investigators.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have not indicated whether Gastelum’s killing is connected to organized crime or any other motive.

For now, investigators continue to examine evidence, including the livestream footage, as they work to identify the attackers and determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

Officials have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation remains active.
