ISLAMABAD: The dramatic story of the Battagram chairlift rescue is heading to the big screen, with the documentary Hanging By A Wire set to release in Pakistani cinemas later this year.
The film tells the story of eight people who were left stranded nearly 900 feet above the ground in a chairlift in Battagram’s Allai Valley in August 2023.
More than just recounting the terrifying rescue, Hanging By A Wire shines a spotlight on the courage of local residents who played a crucial role in bringing the trapped passengers to safety.
Speaking to Geo Digital, producer, director and writer M Ali Naqvi said the film aims to take the story of these local heroes to an international audience.
Naqvi said the rescue was remarkable because local residents and authorities came together to save the lives of the eight people trapped in the chairlift.
“This is an underdeveloped area, but the skill with which the locals carried out the rescue deserves immense appreciation,” he said.
Film highlights unsafe infrastructure
The documentary also draws attention to the infrastructure challenges faced by communities in the region.
Naqvi said children in the area continue to depend on chairlifts to travel to school, highlighting the need for safer transportation facilities.
“We want the system to become safer for these children,” he said, adding that the filmmakers were also seeking to work with NGOs on projects aimed at improving local infrastructure.
Original rescue footage featured in documentary
One of the most striking elements of Hanging By A Wire is its use of original footage recorded during the actual Battagram chairlift rescue operation.
According to Naqvi, some of the drone footage was captured by a local jewellery shop owner named Faisal, while residents also recorded the rescue as it unfolded.
The footage provides a firsthand look at the tense operation and the efforts of people on the ground to save those trapped in the chairlift.
Producer and writer Bilal Sami told Geo Digital that stories about Pakistan’s unsung local heroes rarely receive international attention.
He said the filmmakers wanted to tell a story that would allow audiences around the world to see the positive side of Pakistan through the courage and determination of ordinary people.

The documentary has already travelled beyond Pakistan, with screenings taking place in cinemas across the UK and US.
The film also made its mark at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, where it stood out among thousands of films and received appreciation from audiences.
It will now return home, with Hanging By A Wire scheduled to hit cinemas across Pakistan later this year.

On August 23, 2023, two cables of a chairlift in Battagram’s Allai Valley suddenly snapped, leaving the lift dangling nearly 900 feet above the ground with eight people trapped inside.
The incident sparked a major rescue operation involving the Pakistan Army, local residents and rescue experts.
Army personnel successfully rescued one person using a helicopter. To save the remaining seven passengers, zipline experts Ali Swati and Sahib Khan were brought in.
After an intense rescue operation lasting nearly 12 hours, all eight people were eventually brought to safety.
