MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has added another achievement to his growing résumé after his first novel with bestselling author James Patterson made a strong debut on the New York Times bestseller list.

The Most Dangerous Games, co-written by Donaldson and Patterson, debuted at No. 3 on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list.

The novel also reached No. 1 on Amazon’s mystery, thriller and suspense new-release list and No. 2 on its action and adventure new-release list. It also secured a place among USA Today’s top 10 bestsellers.

A high-stakes fictional competition

The mystery thriller follows 1,000 strangers invited to take part in a global, high-stakes competition, with only 100 ultimately selected to participate.

The contestants face increasingly dangerous challenges in locations ranging from Antarctica to shark-infested waters near a remote Chilean island, scorching deserts, storm-hit mountains and pitch-black caves.

The ultimate prize is $1 billion, but contestants are given no rescue or second chances if they fail.

The book is promoted as a collaboration between MrBeast, described as the world’s leading creator with more than a billion followers, and Patterson, one of the world’s best-selling authors.

How MrBeast and Patterson worked together

Patterson has said he developed the initial outline for the story before meeting Donaldson on a weekly basis to review drafts and refine the narrative.

The collaboration also allowed Donaldson to learn more about traditional storytelling beyond his experience creating content for YouTube.

Donaldson has previously said he approached the collaboration with some reservations, expecting Patterson to be more reserved because of his literary background. He was reportedly surprised by Patterson’s approachable personality, and the two eventually began discussing ideas for a joint project.

Novel linked to real-world MrBeast challenge

The book’s release has also been accompanied by a promotional competition inspired by Donaldson’s signature challenge-based content.

Buyers of the hardcover edition can register for a chance to win $1 million by participating in a real-life MrBeast-style challenge scheduled to begin on September 14.

Meanwhile, sources close to Donaldson’s company have said discussions are underway over potential film rights for the novel.

Strong debut counters early skepticism

The novel’s launch came amid skepticism from some industry observers, who had speculated before its release that reportedly weak presale figures could result in a disappointing commercial debut.

Its No. 3 position on the New York Times hardcover fiction list, along with its strong performance on other bestseller rankings, has complicated that narrative and given the collaboration a considerably stronger start than some early expectations suggested.
