The federal government on Friday increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs5.02 and Rs5.28 per litre, respectively, citing fluctuations in international oil markets.
Under the revised rates, petrol will now cost Rs375.82 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has crossed the Rs400 mark to reach Rs403.32 per litre.
The new prices, announced through a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, will remain effective from September 12 to September 14.
The government has also introduced a daily petroleum pricing mechanism aimed at allowing changes in international oil prices to be reflected more quickly in domestic fuel rates.
Revised petrol and diesel prices
| Fuel | Previous price | New price | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Petrol | Rs370.80 | Rs375.82 | Rs5.02 |
| High-speed diesel | Rs398.04 | Rs403.32 | Rs5.28 |
Under the new mechanism, the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has started publishing daily petroleum prices on its website.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik said the daily prices would be calculated on the basis of a seven-day average of international market prices, in line with international practices.
Why has Pakistan shifted to daily fuel pricing?
The move comes amid continued volatility in global oil markets following renewed hostilities in the Middle East.
The government had initially shifted from a fortnightly to a weekly fuel price review after the conflict in the Middle East began on February 28, when Israel and the United States attacked Iran. The subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Tehran disrupted a major global energy supply route.
Tensions have remained elevated since a fragile ceasefire between Tehran and Washington collapsed in June, raising concerns about a wider conflict and further disruption to international energy supplies.
Under the latest framework, OGRA will determine daily ex-depot prices for petrol and HSD based on the average international market prices recorded during the previous seven days.
Petrol Price Rises by Rs5.58, HSD by Rs4.18 Per Litre
OGRA given authority to revise prices daily
According to an official document, OGRA will be authorised to announce daily petroleum prices without obtaining prior approval from the prime minister or the federal government.
However, prices notified on Fridays will remain unchanged during Saturday and Sunday.
The document states that OGRA will publish daily Platts reference prices from July 1, 2026. It also specifies that the petroleum levy cannot exceed the limit approved by the federal cabinet.
Any change in the petroleum levy will require approval from the Finance Division.
Changes to fuel import arrangements
The government has also revised fuel import arrangements for the fiscal year 2026-27.
Under the new framework, high-speed diesel imports will be routed exclusively through Pakistan State Oil (PSO), while oil marketing companies will be permitted to import petrol according to their respective market shares.
Companies that fail to meet their import or upliftment obligations may be denied fresh import permissions for up to nine months.
The document further states that kerosene oil and light diesel oil prices will also be determined on a daily basis, with relevant authorities directed to ensure immediate implementation of the new pricing mechanism.
