An explosion and major fire at a Canadian military base in Alberta have left multiple people dead and injured, Defence Minister David McGuinty confirmed on Saturday, as emergency crews worked to contain the blaze.

The incident occurred at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Authorities said the fire spread beyond the training area’s boundaries, with strong winds contributing to the spread of flames.

“I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” McGuinty told reporters. He did not disclose the number of casualties or explain what caused the explosion.

Describing the situation as “active and delicate,” the defence minister said further details would be released when more information became available.

Explosion Reported on Military Training Range

The Canadian Armed Forces said the fire was first reported at around 4pm local time on a training range at the base before spreading beyond the designated training area.

Authorities have not confirmed whether weapons, ammunition or other materials were involved in the explosion.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating the incident, while the Canadian Armed Forces and federal, provincial and municipal authorities are coordinating emergency operations.

Local media reported that police were called shortly after 4pm following reports of a fire in the training area. Multiple police resources were deployed, although the initial emergency response later began winding down as personnel remained available if further assistance was required.

Canadian Leaders Express Concern

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as serious and confirmed that it had caused a major fire at the military installation.

“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Carney wrote on Facebook, adding that federal authorities were working closely with provincial and local officials.

Defence Chief General Jennie Carignan said the military was fully engaged with authorities at all levels.

“Our priority remains the welfare of our members, their families and their community, and my thoughts are with all those affected by this incident,” she said in a statement posted on X.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also described the blaze as “significant and tragic,” expressing concern for the military personnel affected.

Canadian lawmaker Dane Lloyd had earlier reported hearing of significant casualties following the explosion and fire.

Strong Winds Spread Fire Beyond Base Perimeter

The Municipal District of Wainwright said strong winds had caused the fire to spread beyond the military base’s perimeter, prompting emergency crews from multiple jurisdictions to respond.

In a subsequent update, municipal authorities said the wildfire south of the community was “being held.” Officials also announced that a fire watch would remain in place to monitor conditions and respond to any changes.

Authorities said no evacuation orders had been issued but urged residents to stay away from the affected area and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.

The nearby community of Wainwright was providing hospital and firefighting assistance, McGuinty said, as officials continued to monitor the situation.

“I cannot recall an incident like this in recent memory,” the defence minister said.

Investigation Underway at Major Training Facility

CFB Wainwright is one of Canada’s major military training facilities and is located approximately 200 kilometres, or 124 miles, southeast of Edmonton.

The investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion, including its cause and the extent of the damage.

Authorities have not yet released official casualty figures or provided a detailed account of what happened at the training range.

The focus remains on supporting those affected, monitoring the fire and determining how the incident occurred. Further information is expected as investigators and emergency officials establish more details.
