WhatsApp, the world’s most widely used messaging app, has introduced a new translation feature designed to make cross-language conversations easier than ever. With this update, users can instantly translate incoming messages into their preferred language, directly inside the chat window.
Unlike third-party apps or external services, the translation process takes place entirely within the user’s device. This not only ensures faster results but also provides an added layer of privacy, a key concern for WhatsApp’s two billion users worldwide.
Global Rollout Across Platforms
According to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, the feature is being gradually rolled out across more than 180 countries. It is available on both Android and iOS platforms, though the functionality differs slightly.

Android users can currently translate messages into six languages: English, Arabic, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, and Russian.

iOS users have access to Apple’s built-in translation system, which supports 19 different languages, offering broader flexibility for iPhone owners.
This phased rollout means some users may gain access sooner than others, depending on their region and device settings.
How to Use the New Feature
On Android, activating the translation tool is straightforward. Users need to press and hold any message, tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner, and then select “Translate.” They can then choose their desired language, and the translated version will appear instantly.
In addition, Android has a unique “auto-translation” option. When enabled for a specific contact or chat, all incoming messages are automatically translated into the user’s preferred language. This eliminates the need for manual action each time. However, Meta has clarified that this feature is not yet available for iOS users.
Availability Limitations
Currently, the translation tool works only on WhatsApp’s mobile applications. It does not extend to WhatsApp Web or the Windows desktop version. Nevertheless, the feature functions across all types of conversations, including private chats, group discussions, and even the recently introduced WhatsApp channels.
This limitation reflects WhatsApp’s strategy of prioritizing mobile-first innovation, as the majority of its traffic continues to come from smartphones.
