Punjab has intensified its traffic enforcement efforts, and authorities have fined more than 2,600 police officers within only six days. The province launched this action under the Law is Equal for Everyone campaign. Officials say the initiative aims to create a culture of accountability that applies to all drivers, including law enforcement personnel.

Crackdown Targets Both Officers and Government Vehicles

The campaign, led by Muhammad Waqas Nazir, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Punjab, focuses on strict compliance with traffic rules. During the first six days, traffic police impounded 434 police vehicles. They also registered cases against 10 officers who committed serious violations.

Furthermore, authorities fined more than 500 additional government vehicles, showing that the campaign covers the entire public sector. As a result, officers argue that the message of equal accountability has become stronger and more visible.

Zero-Tolerance Policy Gains Momentum

Additionally, traffic police adopted a zero-tolerance approach to reinforce the campaign. They shut down 312 official vehicles for non-compliance. Moreover, they registered FIRs against five government drivers.

DIG Nazir noted that every driver must respect the law. He stressed that even police personnel cannot claim exemptions because road safety affects everyone. Consequently, authorities intend to maintain the same level of strictness throughout the campaign.

Growing Need for Road Safety in Punjab

Traffic problems in Punjab have increased in recent years, especially in cities such as Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad. Roads remain overcrowded, and reckless driving continues to cause accidents. Therefore, the provincial government has pushed for stronger enforcement. Additionally, Punjab recently issued over 250,000 traffic fines during another large-scale operation, as reported here: Punjab Issues Over 250,000 Traffic Fines in Four Days.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Pakistan records nearly 27,000 road deaths every year. Thousands more suffer injuries that often require long-term medical care. These figures highlight the urgency of addressing traffic violations more aggressively.

Consequently, the government hopes the new campaign will reduce accidents, strengthen public confidence in law enforcement, and encourage safer driving habits.

Public Response and On-Ground Enforcement

Traffic police teams are carrying out routine checks, mobile patrols, and surprise inspections across the province. As enforcement expands, many citizens have welcomed the effort. They believe that discipline will improve only when authorities apply laws without discrimination.

However, some analysts argue that enforcement alone is not enough. They suggest that public awareness campaigns, road engineering improvements, and consistent long-term monitoring are also essential. Even so, they agree that the government’s current approach marks an important step toward safer roads.

Future Plans and Continued Enforcement

DIG Nazir confirmed that the campaign will continue without interruption. Moreover, he stated that authorities will not grant exceptions to any driver, regardless of rank or department. He reaffirmed that the aim is not only to punish violators but also to change driving behavior across Punjab.

As the crackdown progresses, the province appears determined to prove that traffic laws apply to everyone. With more than 2,600 officers already fined, the campaign signals a shift toward genuine accountability and safer public roads.
