At least 16 people were killed and 14 others injured after a gas leak triggered a powerful explosion in a three-storey residential building in Karachi, rescue officials confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred in the Soldier Bazaar No. 3 area late Wednesday night, causing a section of the structure to collapse and trapping residents under the debris.

Explosion Triggered by Suspected Gas Leak

According to initial findings shared by police and rescue authorities, the blast originated on the first floor of the building and was likely caused by a gas leak. Officials said the leak may have come from a cylinder or a gas suction machine, though a detailed investigation is still underway to determine the exact cause.

The explosion was strong enough to damage a significant portion of the building, prompting an immediate emergency response from rescue teams, police, and medical personnel.

Casualties and Injuries

Rescue workers recovered several bodies and pulled injured residents from the rubble during an overnight operation. Among the deceased were a 10-year-old girl, Nazia, and a 60-year-old man, Mohammad Riaz. The body of a woman was also retrieved, while authorities are still working to identify another victim.

Officials reported that a 14-year-old girl was rescued alive but injured, and several children were among those taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Ongoing Rescue Operation

Rescue authorities believe at least two people may still be trapped under the debris. However, the narrow streets surrounding the building have made it difficult for heavy machinery and emergency vehicles to access the site, slowing the search and recovery process.

Police have cordoned off the area and increased security to facilitate rescue efforts and prevent crowds from interfering with operations.

Authorities said all available resources are being used to continue the search and assist affected families, while an inquiry into the safety conditions of the building and the source of the gas leak has also been initiated.
