Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has joined the $1 trillion club for the first time, placing the US chipmaker among a small group of American companies to reach the milestone.

The company achieved the landmark rapidly, with AMD shares surging around 9% on Monday to a record above $613. The rally briefly pushed its market capitalisation beyond $1 trillion.

The move represents a significant increase from roughly $255 billion around the same time last year.

Much of the enthusiasm surrounding AMD is linked to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence and the growing demand for chips used to build and operate AI systems.

AMD takes aim at Nvidia’s dominance

AMD has spent years attempting to challenge Nvidia’s dominant position in the market for high-performance chips used in AI data centres.

The company is increasingly moving beyond selling individual processors and is offering complete AI systems that combine processors with networking equipment and other hardware.

The strategy reflects growing investor expectations that the AI chip market could support more than one major technology provider.

AMD has also been gaining ground in the server central processing unit market, taking share from Intel as demand increases for processors used alongside graphics processing units in data centres.

The company’s progress in AI and data-centre technology has helped drive a dramatic rise in its stock price.

AMD stock gains outpace Nasdaq

AMD shares are now up around 185% in 2026, compared with a gain of less than 16% for the Nasdaq.

The company’s latest valuation milestone makes AMD only the fourth US chipmaker to surpass $1 trillion in market value.

Nvidia, Broadcom and Micron have previously reached the milestone.

However, Nvidia remains far larger than its rival. The AI chip leader is currently valued at more than $5 trillion, highlighting the substantial gap AMD would still need to close to match Nvidia’s scale.

AMD’s move into the $1 trillion club nevertheless reflects the growing investor focus on competition within the AI semiconductor industry and expectations that demand for AI infrastructure will continue to expand.
