Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for her distinctive body of work, which combines classical traditions with innovative forms of contemporary writing.

The Swedish Academy announced the award on Thursday, praising Carson “for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature.”

The prize is worth 12 million Swedish crowns, equivalent to around $1.2 million.

Carson surprised by Nobel win

Carson, 76, was reportedly surprised by the announcement. Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she spoke briefly with the writer after informing her about the award.

“She was very taken by surprise,” Carlberg said, adding that Carson was currently in Iceland and had told her that she was “listening to the wind.”

Born in Toronto, Carson has also held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. Her literary work frequently moves between poetry, prose, dialogue and translation, making it difficult to place within a single genre.

Classical Greek literature shapes her work

Carson is particularly recognised for her translations and interpretations of classical Greek literature, which have played a major role in shaping her writing.

Her work includes poetry, literary criticism, opera libretti and verse novels. One of her best-known books is Autobiography of Red, published in 1998.

The Swedish Academy said much of Carson’s literary career has focused on the relationship between a scholar’s attention to language and a poet’s search for new meaning.

The Academy also highlighted her approach to etymology and said her translations from Classical Greek can be considered independent literary works in their own right.

Her 2019 performance piece Norma Jeane Baker of Troy is another example of her genre-defying style. The work brings together the story of Helen of Troy from Euripides’ Helen with the life and image of Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe.

Carson was among Nobel favourites

Carson had been considered one of the leading contenders for this year’s literature prize. Her selection places her among some of the most celebrated writers in Nobel history, including Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro and Ernest Hemingway.

The literature prize has long generated debate over the Swedish Academy’s choices. Critics have pointed to major writers such as Leo Tolstoy, Virginia Woolf and Jorge Luis Borges who never received the award, while others have accused the Academy of overlooking American authors.

The Academy has also defended its selections by pointing to writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who won in 1982, and Doris Lessing, who received the prize in 2007. Supporters argue that the award can help draw attention to less familiar literary traditions.

Established through the will of Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel, the Nobel Prizes have been awarded since 1901.

Last year’s Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Hungarian writer Laszlo Krasznahorkai, whose work has been described as apocalyptic in style.
