FLORIDA: Florida carried out two executions on the same day for the first time in more than six decades, executing two convicted murderers by lethal injection on July 28, 2026, according to US officials.
The executions marked a rare occurrence in the United States and came as Florida continued to lead the nation in the number of executions carried out since the beginning of 2025.
James Duckett executed for 1987 murder
The first execution was that of James Duckett, 68, who was convicted of the 1987 murder of an 11-year-old girl.
Duckett was pronounced dead by lethal injection at 1:19 p.m. ET after spending decades on death row.
Dominick Occhicone executed hours later
Nearly five hours later, prison officials executed Dominick Occhicone, 80, at 6:13 p.m. ET.
Occhicone had been sentenced to death for the 1986 murders of the parents of his former fiancée.
According to reports, he became the second-oldest inmate ever executed in the United States.
First same-day executions in Florida since 1964
According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Tuesday’s executions marked the first time since 1964 that Florida carried out two executions in a single day.
The report also noted that Arkansas was the only other US state to conduct two executions on the same day in recent history, doing so in 2017.
Florida leads US executions since 2025
Florida has carried out the highest number of executions in the United States since January 2025.
According to figures cited in the report, 31 of the 66 executions carried out nationwide since the beginning of 2025 have taken place in Florida.
The report also said that 12 executions have been carried out in Florida during 2026, accounting for roughly 63% of all executions in the United States this year and exceeding the combined total of all other states.
