Indian students intensified their protests in Jharkhand on Monday, marching towards the state assembly over alleged irregularities in government recruitment examinations.
The demonstrations, centred in the state capital Ranchi, have been continuing since July 29 and have now grown into a wider dispute over the way public-sector recruitment tests are organised and conducted.
At least six protesters are reportedly on hunger strike, including student leader Devendra Nath Mahto, who has been fasting for more than a week.
Students Demand Cancellation of Exams
The protesters are demanding the cancellation of several examinations conducted by a private company on behalf of the Jharkhand government.
They are also calling for an investigation by federal authorities into the alleged irregularities surrounding the examinations.
Mahto, 33, said the protesters wanted fundamental changes to the recruitment system rather than limited adjustments.
“We want the whole system to change,” he said, according to Indian media reports.
For many young people in Jharkhand, government recruitment examinations are considered an important route towards stable employment. Allegations of irregularities have therefore generated strong reactions among students and job applicants preparing for competitive examinations.
Police Deploy Barricades Around Assembly
Hundreds of police officers were deployed around the state assembly in Ranchi on Monday.
Security personnel placed barbed-wire barricades around the assembly complex as large groups of students approached the area while chanting slogans.
The heightened security came after repeated discussions between representatives of the protesters and the state government failed to produce an agreement acceptable to the demonstrators.
The protesters have continued to demand action on the examination system, despite efforts by the authorities to bring the situation under control through negotiations.
Chief Minister Calls for Dialogue
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has attempted to ease tensions by accepting some of the protesters’ demands.
Several members of the civil service body responsible for overseeing the examinations have also stepped down amid the controversy.

Speaking on Sunday, Soren urged the protesters and authorities to resolve their differences through negotiations.
“Every problem can be resolved through dialogue,” he said.
However, the continuation of the hunger strike and the latest march towards the assembly indicate that many students remain dissatisfied with the steps announced so far.
Protests Reflect Wider Anger Over Exams
The demonstrations in Jharkhand come amid growing public concern in India over the integrity of competitive examinations.
Government jobs remain highly sought after in the country, where large numbers of young people compete for a relatively limited number of positions. As a result, allegations of question-paper leaks, administrative failures or other irregularities can have significant consequences for candidates who spend months or years preparing for examinations.
The Jharkhand protests have also drawn comparisons with a recent youth-led movement in New Delhi, where demonstrators organised by the online Cockroach Janta Party protested for 36 days over alleged problems in India’s examination system.
That movement eventually resulted in the resignation of then Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, giving the protesters an unusual political victory and turning examination integrity into a prominent national issue.
Different Political Landscape in Jharkhand
While the New Delhi protests directly challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the situation in Jharkhand has a different political dimension.
The current state government led by Hemant Soren is opposed to the BJP, meaning the protests are directed primarily at a state administration controlled by a political alliance different from the one targeted in the national capital.
Nevertheless, the underlying concern is similar: students and job applicants want greater transparency, accountability and reliability in recruitment examinations.
As protests continue in Ranchi, the pressure on the Jharkhand government is likely to remain focused on whether the disputed examinations will be cancelled and whether an independent investigation will be ordered.
For the protesters, the issue goes beyond individual examinations. They are demanding broader reforms to ensure that government recruitment tests are conducted fairly and that candidates can compete for jobs without concerns over alleged irregularities.
