Iran’s head coach Amir Ghalenoei has sharply criticised the treatment of his squad at the FIFA World Cup 2026, calling Iran the “most oppressed team in the World Cup” due to ongoing logistical and administrative issues.
His remarks came shortly after Iran’s 2-2 draw against New Zealand in Los Angeles, where the team reportedly faced sudden changes in travel arrangements and limited recovery time between fixtures.
Claims of Visa and Travel Disruptions
According to the coach, the Iranian squad experienced repeated disruptions before and during the tournament, including delayed visa issuance and last-minute changes in travel planning.
He stated that some support staff were denied visas by the United States, while players received documentation only shortly before the tournament began.
Iran had initially planned to base its training camp in Arizona, but later shifted to Tijuana, Mexico, due to logistical complications.
Ghalenoei said the team was later informed it would be required to leave the United States immediately after their opening match, contradicting earlier assurances that they would remain for recovery purposes.
Concerns Over Player Recovery and Welfare
The coach described the situation as physically and mentally challenging for the squad, arguing that the lack of recovery time could affect performance in upcoming matches.
He said the repeated changes had placed additional pressure on technical staff, who were forced to take on multiple roles due to the absence of key personnel.
Despite the difficulties, Ghalenoei insisted that the team would continue to compete at their best.
Player Reaction and Wider Frustration
Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi also expressed frustration after the match, describing the overall situation as “very stressful” and “disastrous” for players and staff.
He said the team only learned about the immediate travel requirement on match day, adding that the uncertainty had negatively affected preparation and morale.
Taremi also suggested that FIFA leadership, including president Gianni Infantino, had been informed about the issue and was attempting to intervene.

Context of Wider Geopolitical Tensions
The controversy comes amid heightened geopolitical tension between Iran and the United States, which only recently signed a framework peace agreement following months of conflict.
Iran’s participation in the tournament has been overshadowed by diplomatic friction, including visa restrictions and operational challenges linked to broader political disputes.
Officials and analysts note that such tensions have increasingly spilled over into international sporting events, complicating logistics for teams caught in geopolitical disputes.
FIFA and Tournament Environment
The complaints have raised questions about tournament logistics and player welfare standards at one of football’s most globally dispersed World Cup editions.
While FIFA has not issued a detailed response, Iranian officials suggest they are seeking intervention to ensure fair treatment and adequate recovery conditions for the squad.
As the group stage continues, attention is likely to remain on how governing bodies address such concerns in a politically sensitive sporting environment.
