Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Jumanji: Open World, giving fans a fresh look at the highly anticipated finale of the modern Jumanji trilogy. This time, the franchise takes a dramatic new direction as the game’s characters escape into the real world.
Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, and Karen Gillan, the film is set to arrive in theaters on December 25, 2026.
The Franchise Turns Its Story Upside Down
Unlike the previous films, where teenagers were transported into the Jumanji video game, Jumanji: Open World reverses the concept.
The trailer reveals that the game’s avatar characters have broken free from their digital world and must navigate life in reality, creating chaos as they struggle to understand the world around them.
One character, played by Alex Wolff, explains the unusual situation: “We have a problem. They’re video game characters, but they’re stuck in demo mode.”
The new premise promises a mix of action, comedy, and adventure while giving the long-running franchise a fresh twist.
Star-Studded Cast Returns
The film reunites the main cast from the previous installments, including:
- Dwayne Johnson

Jake Kasdan Returns to Direct
Director Jake Kasdan, who helmed both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), returns to direct the trilogy’s final chapter.
Kasdan also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg and serves as a producer with Dwayne Johnson, Matt Tolmach, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia.
A Billion-Dollar Franchise Nears Its Finale
Sony’s modern Jumanji series has been one of the studio’s biggest box office successes.
- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) earned more than $950 million worldwide.
- Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) grossed over $801 million globally.
The franchise is based on Chris Van Allsburg’s 1981 children’s book, which was first adapted into the beloved 1995 film starring Robin Williams.
Earlier this year at CinemaCon, the cast unveiled the film’s title and first footage, with Jack Black describing Open World as his favorite installment to work on.
