Netflix has reportedly abandoned or put on hold plans for a much-discussed English-language Squid Game project associated with acclaimed filmmaker David Fincher, marking a surprising development for fans who had been following speculation about the series for years.
The project had been linked to Fincher for some time, but Netflix never formally announced the production. Recent reports now indicate that the proposed series has been delayed or dropped, although its exact status remains unclear.
Fincher was reportedly developing a new story
According to reports, Fincher had been working on the concept alongside Dennis Kelly, creator of the British series Utopia.
Rather than remake the original South Korean series, the proposed project was expected to tell a completely new story set within the wider Squid Game universe.
That approach could have allowed the franchise to expand into an English-language setting while maintaining the themes of competition, survival and social inequality that helped make the original series a global success.
Fincher’s involvement had generated considerable interest because of his long-standing relationship with Netflix. He previously worked with the streaming platform on major projects including House of Cards, Mindhunter and The Killer.

Speculation about an American expansion of the franchise intensified following the appearance of Cate Blanchett in the third-season finale of Squid Game.
Blanchett appeared briefly in Los Angeles, playing the Korean game of ddakji with a player. The scene immediately sparked theories among fans that Netflix could be preparing an American-set story.

However, Netflix never confirmed that the scene was connected to Fincher’s reported project.
