The federal government is expected to present the budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 in the National Assembly on June 12, according to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry. The budget will outline key economic priorities, spending plans, and policy direction for the coming financial year.

Budget Schedule Revised Multiple Times

Initially, the government planned to present the budget on June 5. However, the date was first shifted to June 10 due to consultations with coalition partners and discussions over proposed fiscal measures. It has now been further adjusted, with June 12 emerging as the likely date for presentation.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will formally present the budget in the lower house of parliament, the minister confirmed.

Coalition Consultations and Political Agreement

According to official sources, the government has reached broad agreement with key coalition partner Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on most budget proposals. The PPP has reportedly assured its support for the passage of the budget, strengthening the government’s position ahead of parliamentary proceedings.

A recent high-level meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari also helped finalise much of the fiscal framework, although a few technical matters remain under discussion.

IMF Coordination and Economic Strategy

The budget has been prepared in consultation with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other stakeholders, reflecting Pakistan’s ongoing commitment to fiscal discipline and structural reforms.

Authorities have indicated a focus on improving tax administration, widening the tax base, and enhancing enforcement mechanisms. At the same time, the government has expressed a desire to avoid introducing new taxes where possible, aiming instead to improve revenue collection efficiency.

Development Spending and Legal Deadline

Officials have proposed a development budget exceeding Rs1.1 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year, targeting infrastructure, energy, and social sector projects.

Under constitutional requirements, the federal budget must be approved by June 30 so that the new fiscal year can begin on July 1. This places pressure on parliament to complete budget discussions and approvals within a tight timeframe.

With the presentation expected on June 12, the government is now moving toward final parliamentary procedures that will shape Pakistan’s economic direction for 2026-27.
