KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) remained in positive territory on Wednesday as sustained buying interest supported the benchmark index, extending the market’s upward momentum amid mixed signals from international markets.
At 12:49pm, the KSE-100 Index was trading at 164,863.97 points, up 396.77 points, or 0.24%, from the previous close of 164,467.20 points.
The market opened on a positive note and advanced soon after the opening bell, reaching 164,830.55 points, an increase of 363.35 points, or 0.22%, according to the initial market update. The benchmark subsequently extended its gains before easing from its session high.
Buying Interest Supports Market Momentum
The latest gains reflected continued investor interest in equities, with the stock market maintaining its positive trend for a third consecutive session.
Regional markets also supported investor sentiment. Asian stocks advanced on Wednesday as renewed enthusiasm surrounding artificial intelligence boosted confidence ahead of earnings announcements from major US companies.
However, investors remained cautious about developments in international energy markets, where rising crude oil prices raised concerns about potential supply disruptions.
Rising Oil Prices Pose Economic Challenges
International oil prices climbed after Yemen’s Houthi group claimed an attack on a major Saudi Arabian oil refinery, reviving concerns about the security of Middle Eastern energy supplies.
Brent crude futures rose $2.02, or 1.8%, to $115.90 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained $2.01, or 2%, to $101.91 as of 0735 GMT.
PSX Gains Over 1,000 Points as Investors Look Past Rate Hike
The increase in oil prices remains a concern for Pakistan because the country relies heavily on imported energy to meet domestic demand.
Higher crude prices can increase the national import bill, put pressure on foreign exchange reserves and contribute to inflation through rising transportation, electricity and production costs.
Investors Monitor Domestic and Global Developments
Despite external economic uncertainties, buying activity helped the PSX maintain its upward trajectory during Wednesday’s trading session.
Market participants are likely to remain attentive to movements in international oil prices, regional geopolitical developments and broader global market trends.
The sustainability of the rally will also depend on domestic economic conditions and investor expectations regarding inflation, interest rates and corporate earnings.
For now, continued buying interest has supported the benchmark index, although rising energy costs remain a significant risk for Pakistan’s economic outlook.
