KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed volatile trading on Wednesday, with the benchmark KSE-100 index moving between positive and negative territory as investors remained cautious amid domestic political uncertainty and rising international oil prices.
At midday, the KSE-100 index stood at 164,807.98, gaining 31.54 points, or 0.02%. During the session, the benchmark touched an intraday high of 165,209.05 and a low of 164,060.33, highlighting uncertainty among market participants.
The market opened on a positive note, with the index climbing to 165,032.13 by 9:33am, up 255.69 points, or 0.16%. However, selling pressure and continued fluctuations soon erased most of the early gains.
Selling Pressure Across Major Sectors
Investor sentiment remained subdued following the imposition of emergency measures and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adding to concerns over the domestic political outlook.
Selling activity was visible across several key sectors, including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration companies, power generation, refineries and oil marketing companies.
The broad-based pressure limited the benchmark’s ability to maintain its early upward momentum, leaving the market fluctuating around the previous closing level.
Investors remained cautious as they assessed the potential implications of political developments for economic stability and business confidence.
Rising Oil Prices Add to Market Uncertainty
Developments in international energy markets also contributed to investor concerns.
Global oil prices rose on Wednesday after two vessels were struck in the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian officials reportedly said Tehran was adopting new tactics to target ships passing through the strategic waterway.
The developments heightened concerns about potential disruptions to global energy supplies and the economic consequences of prolonged regional tensions.
By 0630 GMT, Brent crude futures had gained 34 cents, or 0.3%, to $106.03 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 28 cents, or 0.3%, to $94.42 a barrel. Both benchmarks had gained more than $1 earlier in the session before paring some of their advances.
PSX Falls 348 Points as Investors Book Profits After Early Rally
Higher oil prices can increase Pakistan’s import bill and place additional pressure on inflation, the current account and domestic fuel costs, depending on the duration and extent of the increase.
These concerns have added another layer of uncertainty for investors already monitoring the domestic political situation.
Investors Await Clearer Market Direction
The KSE-100 index’s movement between gains and losses reflected a cautious trading environment, with selling pressure across major sectors offsetting the limited buying interest.
Market participants are expected to continue monitoring political developments, movements in international oil prices and broader economic indicators for clues about the market’s direction.
For the remainder of Wednesday’s session, investor sentiment will likely remain sensitive to changes in domestic political conditions and developments affecting global energy supplies.
