The political controversy surrounding Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain’s remarks about corruption in Punjab has taken a new turn, with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif suggesting that the issue could be part of a wider political conspiracy against the provincial government.

Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has endorsed Asif’s concerns, saying the provincial government is aware of attempts to discredit Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and create an alternative political arrangement. However, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) has rejected the conspiracy theory and maintained that Salik’s remarks were routine political comments.

Asif Suspects Wider Conspiracy

Speaking to a private television channel on Thursday night, Khawaja Asif expressed suspicion that Salik Hussain’s controversial interview might be connected to a broader political plan targeting the Punjab government.

He claimed that certain individuals, including some businessmen whom he described as “carpetbaggers”, were attempting to undermine the provincial administration to create space for an alternative political arrangement.

According to Asif, selectively highlighting corruption allegations against Punjab, despite corruption being a wider national concern, appeared to be an effort to prepare the ground for a future political strategy.

Asked whether the alleged arrangement was specifically intended to target Maryam Nawaz and her government, Asif said the possibility could not be ruled out. He added that other political figures might also become targets.

However, the defence minister refrained from presenting his complete assessment, saying it was too early to reach a final conclusion.

He also suggested that Salik’s family connections with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi could be one factor behind the provincial government’s strong reaction.

Asif further claimed that some individuals might be seeking political space ahead of future elections, believing that the possible retirement of existing political leaders could create opportunities for them to emerge as potential replacements.

Punjab Government Endorses Asif

Responding to a question from The Express Tribune about Asif’s suspicions, Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari said the defence minister had highlighted facts that the provincial government was already aware of.

Her remarks indicated that the Punjab government shares concerns about possible efforts to weaken Maryam Nawaz politically and establish an alternative political arrangement.

The endorsement has added another dimension to the dispute, which initially emerged from Salik Hussain’s comments about corruption and the distribution of Punjab’s development budget.

How the Controversy Started

The dispute began after Chaudhry Salik Hussain appeared in an interview with a private television channel on November 2.

During the programme, the federal minister said complaints about corruption in Punjab were common. He also claimed that a disproportionate share of the province’s development budget was being spent in Lahore, a stronghold of the ruling PML-N.

The remarks prompted a strong response from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who issued a Rs5 billion defamation notice to Salik and the television channel on November 3.

Through the legal notice, she demanded an unconditional apology, withdrawal of the statements and payment of damages over the allegations.

On November 4, Khawaja Asif initially described Salik’s remarks on X as a political move aimed at creating additional space for his party in the federal and Punjab governments by targeting Maryam Nawaz’s administration.

His latest comments, however, suggest that he believes the controversy could extend beyond ordinary political disagreements.

PML-Q Rejects Conspiracy Theory

PML-Q spokesperson Ghulam Mustafa Malik dismissed the suggestion that Salik’s interview was part of a conspiracy against the Punjab government.

He argued that Khawaja Asif had himself acknowledged the corruption allegations, while Salik had simply made a routine statement without introducing anything new.

Malik said the ruling party had unnecessarily turned the remarks into a major controversy. He added that his party was pleased that the PML-N was giving its leaders greater political importance by reading too much into a general statement.

He also stressed that the PML-Q had not levelled any direct allegations against specific individuals.

Asked whether anyone had approached the party to resolve the dispute, Malik said no one had intervened so far. He observed that only people close to Maryam Nawaz were publicly defending the Punjab government, while the PML-N’s Islamabad leadership had remained silent.

Malik added that Salik would respond to the legal notice within a day or two.

Salik Stands by His Remarks

Earlier, Salik Hussain confirmed through a post on X that he had received the defamation notice and would respond to it soon.

He also remarked that “transparency is never meant to exist behind closed doors.”

Speaking to journalists at Parliament House, the federal minister said he would submit a comprehensive response to the notice in court and maintained that he stood by his allegations concerning corruption in Punjab.

He described reports about the appointment of the Gujrat deputy commissioner as fabricated and clarified that his comments about corruption represented his personal views.

Salik also ruled out the possibility of the PML-Q leaving the PML-N-led government, saying that his immediate priority was to respond to the legal notice.

The dispute has now developed into a wider political disagreement, with the Punjab government backing Asif’s concerns, while the PML-Q insists that the original remarks have been unnecessarily escalated.
