Tarbela Dam Water Level Rises; Spillways to Be Opened

Flood Alert Issued for Sindh River Due to Spillway Operation

Islamabad – Continuous heavy rainfall in the northern parts of the country has caused a significant rise in water levels at Tarbela Dam, prompting authorities to open the dam’s spillways.

Residents living along the spillway routes have been advised to stay alert and take precautions, as the opening of the spillways may lead to a surge in the Indus River, increasing the risk of flooding in nearby areas.

According to an NDMA spokesperson, water flow in the Indus River could increase by 260,000 to 270,000 cusecs due to this operation.

In light of this potential increase, people living near riverbanks and water channels are advised to avoid venturing near these areas. Tourists visiting recreational sites near the Indus River are urged to remain cautious and cooperate with local authorities.

Alerts have been issued for riverside communities in Nowshera, Swabi, and Haripur. District administrations, Rescue 1122, Civil Defense, and other concerned agencies have been instructed to implement emergency safety measures.

Locals have been strongly advised to take precautionary steps and avoid going near rivers and flood-prone water passages during this period.
