Taylor Swift’s reported wedding day was accompanied by heartbreaking personal news, as Kirk Schwabe, a former teacher and one-time security guard who became a father figure during her teenage years, died after a battle with metastatic kidney cancer. He was 69.
According to The Telegraph, Schwabe passed away on the same day Swift reportedly married NFL star Travis Kelce, adding a deeply emotional dimension to what was otherwise expected to be a joyful milestone.
A Mentor During Swift’s Early Years
Schwabe taught criminal justice at Hendersonville High School in Tennessee while Swift was a student there. As her music career began to gain momentum, he also worked as part of her security team, helping protect the young singer during the early stages of her rise to fame.
His wife, Jane Schwabe, said he always regarded Swift with the same care and affection he showed his own daughters.
“He treated her like he did his daughters,” she told The Telegraph.
He Believed Swift Had Found the Right Partner
Only days before his death, Schwabe spoke warmly about Swift’s reported relationship with Travis Kelce, expressing confidence in her judgment.
“I do trust Taylor’s judgment. She knows what’s best,” he told The Telegraph in an interview published on July 2.
His comments reflected the pride and support he continued to feel for the singer years after their professional paths had diverged.
Family Shared Update on His Final Days
The day before his passing, Schwabe’s daughter, Sarah Gordon, shared an update on Facebook, revealing that his condition had worsened significantly and that he had entered hospice care.
She wrote that her father had devoted his life to teaching and had always cared deeply for his students.
Report Reveals Alleged Inside Details of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Wedding
“Over the past several weeks, his health has declined rapidly and he has now been moved to hospice care. If you know my dad, you know he has poured his heart into everything he’s done. He has always loved teaching. He loves his students.”
Recognising Swift’s Talent Early
Schwabe often recalled recognising Swift’s extraordinary potential long before she became one of the world’s biggest music stars.
He remembered encouraging her by saying:
“You’re a superstar. This is not fun and games no more. You are it. Everything keeps going up and up and up, and the sky’s the limit for you.”
Although he eventually stepped away from his role as part of Swift’s security team, he remained proud of her achievements throughout her career.
A Lasting Tribute
Swift had previously honoured Schwabe by naming a teacher character after him in her 2010 film Valentine’s Day, a gesture widely seen as a tribute to the lasting influence he had on her life.
According to his family, Schwabe was especially happy for Swift and Kelce in the days leading up to their reported wedding, making the timing of his passing particularly poignant for those who knew him.
